WASHINGTON: US lawmakers delivered a widely anticipated but yet stunning rebuke to President Bush on Friday with a vote that in effect suggested he was fighting a war against the wishes of the American people.
By a 246-182 margin, the Democrat-majority House of Representatives approved a non-binding resolution opposing Bush's plan to commit 21,500 additional troops to Iraq. Seventeen Republicans joined 229 Democrats in favor of the resolution; two Democrats voted against it. Six members - including former speaker Dennis Hastert - did not vote.
Although the resolution is non-binding and does not materially alter the situation, it was the worst political defeat for Bush since he initiated the war against Iraq four years ago - with legislative backing at that time.
Pro-Bush lawmakers argued now that passage of such a resolution would send a wrong message to America's enemy but a majority of legislators chose to reflect the deeply anti-war mood in the country.
