PLEASE DON'T BOTHER By Nancy Greggs
In an effort to save yourselves the trouble of talking ad nauseum about the things most of us are tired of hearing – and, quite frankly, in a selfish effort on my part to avoid having to listen to the same old/same old ridiculous crap – I would truly appreciate it if you Republicans would refrain from preaching to me, lying to me, and spouting things that are known to be untrue as though they were fact.
In furtherance of that suggestion …
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER with phrases like victory in Iraq, turning the corner, accomplishing the mission, et cetera. I am capable of reading newspapers and connecting to the internet; therefore, I know what is actually happening in Iraq. And in case you haven’t noticed, it’s not going well.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER telling me what good Christians you are. Good Christians don’t condone torture, no less vote to sanction its use. They also don’t continue to support a war that has killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, especially when that war has accomplished nothing else other than death and destruction.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER insisting that you “Support the Troops”. You voted to cut their pay, their benefits, and their pensions while they were in combat, and are now considering cutting veterans’ health care benefits yet again. You are now supporting a surge of more troops into Iraq, knowing that they are being deployed short of the necessary equipment and supplies. I’ve seen how supportive you’ve been of returning soldiers who have suffered the loss of limbs, mobility, and mental capacity and stability. If this is your idea of support, I wouldn’t want to see your idea of negligence.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER spewing your utter nonsense about how we’re fighting ‘em over there, so we won’t have to fight ‘em over here. The chances of me having to fight a crazed terrorist at the local mall are miniscule, while having to fight the crazed Fundies that are intent on taking over my government is all too real.
PLEASE DON'T BOTHER with that raggedy old drama about how the troops are fighting in the Middle East to protect my freedoms. While they have been otherwise occupied, your party and its president have managed to take away my freedoms -- in which case, it would seem logical that we bring the troops home now, because they're fighting a battle that has already been lost.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER with that same old tired rhetoric about how your party can protect Americans and keep them safe. We watched how you protected our fellow citizens in New Orleans from drowning, from dying of hunger or thirst, from spending days in need of assistance that never came. We also watched your non-existent oversight of the funding meant to be spent on their welfare, and the rebuilding of their city, which instead wound up in the pockets of con-men willing to take advantage of the misery of others.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER dragging out that party of fiscal responsibility thing again – I mean please, please, not ever again. The average citizen can count the zeroes when the national debt is posted, and they also know who’s going to wind up paying that debt. They also know who allowed that debt to happen, so please, for the love of God, cut that sorry old song from the repertoire.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER shouting about your undying patriotism. You not only stood by in silence while your president broke the law and ignored the Constitution, you actually supported him when he did so. Let’s face it; there’s nothing more unAmerican than cheerleading the anti-American behavior of your own not-duly elected leader, let alone congratulating yourselves on wielding the rubber-stamp that allowed him to get away with it.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER with any more mindless blathering about how anyone who disagrees with your commander-in-chief’s war strategery is aiding and abetting the enemy. The fact that he lied the country into a war that has become more disastrous each day, thanks to his incompetence and arrogance, is comfort enough to those who seek to harm us. When it comes to emboldening the enemy, he really doesn’t need any help. (And by the way, the fact that your great leader actually uses words like strategery should have been a tip-off as to his intellectual capabilities.)
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER pointing to your alleged accomplishments when you were in control of the government. We already know what your accomplishments were – war, destruction, joblessness, a tanking economy, failures in our educational system, a crumbling infrastructure – need I go on? We’re all living with your many accomplishments on a daily basis; we need no reminders, thank you very much.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER lecturing on how godless my party members are. You allegedly godly folks have given tax cuts to the wealthy and tax subsidies to corporations raking in record profits, at the same time you’ve done nothing to assist the homeless, the hungry, the out-of-work, the down-and-out. (I’m sure Jesus is proud of you – but you know what a stickler He was about not bragging about your own good works.)
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER boasting about how hard you’ve worked for your constituents, or for the country as a whole. If you want to brag about how hard you’ve worked for the oil companies or the pharmaceutical industry, that’s fair. You’ve done an incredible job on their behalf – and you’ve managed to do it only working two or three days a week, which is truly astonishing.
PLEASE DON’T BOTHER. Really, don’t. Your idiocy is nerve-grating, to say the least, and it’s turning off voters from one end of the country to the other …
… on second thought, PLEASE DISREGARD THE AFOREMENTIONED, AND KEEP IT UP!
