Aznar May Be Tried as War Criminal

Madrid, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) The PCE (Spanish Communist Party) said Monday that it will file a lawsuit, along with other organizations, to have ex President of Government Jose Maria Aznar tried as a war criminal.

Aznar will be accused of "contributing to the beginning of an illegal and bloody war for the control of energy resources in Iraq," said the PCE in a press release.

The organization added that it would back "all international initiatives aimed at trying the Azores trio for committing crimes of war and against humankind, due to their direct support for the invasion, destruction and occupation of Iraq." The trio is made up of Aznar, US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who masterminded the invasion on the island of Azores in a meeting known as "the Azores photo." The PCE is also preparing a formal petition demanding that the Attorney General s Office investigate the role of the Popular Party, particularly its president, in sending Spanish police officers to the illegal naval base in Guantanamo.

According to the PCE, the presence of Spanish police officers in Guantanamo reveals obscure elements that must be investigated by both the Spanish Parliament and the Justice system, as it is known that prisoners have been tortured in that US enclave, in violation of Spanish legislation and the 1978 Constitution.
