Retired hockey star considers run for Congress
By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN
Associated Press Writer

February 28, 2007, 3:52 PM EST

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- U.S. Rep. Chris Shays was one of the few moderate Republicans
to survive a body blow by Democrats in November, but he may soon face a check from
retired New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter.

Richter, a 40-year-old Democrat who lives in Guilford, said he expects to make a decision
in the next few weeks about whether to run for the Fairfield County seat in 2008.

"I've considered entering public office in some form for a long time," Richter told The
Associated Press. "I'm getting positive responses."

Richter worked last year for U.S. Rep. John Hall, a Democrat and former musician who
upset six-term incumbent Republican Sue Kelly in upstate New York. Richter helped Hall,
who opposed the Iraq war, win over police officers, fire fighters and other constituents
who might not have otherwise voted for him, said Tom Staudter, Hall's spokesman.

1. Well, at least hockey has some Democrats...
I find baseball and football, the other two sports I follow, to be quite freeper-ridden.

3. All the Representatives in CT would be (D)s if this guy won.
We could use some more celebrities in our party, preferably ones with brains. John Hall and Mike Richter would be a good start.

Richter would be a great candidate.

Shays should have been dumped but thanks to the LIEberMe effect, he was spared. Thanks you selfish do-nothing ass!

9. Could Richter take out woosie Shays in '08

...Work as a CT Congressman for 2 years (in Shay's seat)

Then, by the time 2010 rolls around, he'll be able to kick Liebermann's ass out as well as he runs for U.S. Senate!!!

Thank you Nutmegger for getting that 5th vote in!!

12. There are probably lots of Democrats in Hockey
Realize that a large percentage of NHL players are Canadian or European- and Hockey is generally more popular in the northern United States than in the deep south and the west where most baseball players come from and where they can play year round- completely different demographic.

26. Has a Colorado connection
Played for the Colorado Rockies (no, not the baseball team, but the old hockey team in the '80s).

Yeah, I'd support him in a heartbeat and would send him money if he is up for removing Shays.

14. go Rickey!
Hockey players are more grounded than the typical US stupid millionaire athlete demographic. HoF goalie Ken Dryden is the #2 person in the liberal party in the Canada Parliament. HoF D Red Kelly was a long-time MP, also in the liberal party, IIRC.

The phenomenon of athletes being country-club right-wing morons is an American thing.

18. He made a glove save on Bure in that series that was even better
I've been a hockey guy all my life and that series was easily one of the best Stanley Cup series that I've ever seen.

Richter shined again in the World Hockey tourney a couple years later too.

Only reason we got the Silver!

He is very smart, retired before he completely destroyed his knees, and he's COOL!

(and a fellow goalie!) ;)

Coaches vs. Kids games...
Here I am helping the mites (they have no goalie of their own for me to coach) salvage a TIE against the Coaches!!!
I LOVE being a COACH! :woohoo:

22. I always had a blast playing hockey with the kids
Some of them little buggers were good! :)

The only problem I had with the younger goalies was they were all into Hasek, who I think is a great goalie but technically maybe the worst I've ever seen. The reason he makes so many great saves is he's out of position. He's not a model for the kids in a technical sense.

Brodeur is the guy they should look at,but he's so good technically he doesn't have to be flashy, thus the kids don't get into as much.I had to really explain this to a few of them over and over before they realized how good he was.

Having said all that,if I was forced to pick five all-time saves Hasek would have three of them :)

23. Uggg...The Hasek Effect
I tell them whomever you emulate...they all have the same foundation. Angles, centering telescoping on long shots...

If they would emulate any goalie's foundation, please let it be:

24. Shays opponent really gave him a tough run!
I watched a couple of his debates with her and she came back swinging it out of the part every time! Not sure how he managed to squeak past her.

But if this guy can do it, I say go for it! He's got the background experience with a winning campaign, and Shays is definitely vulnerable. Go get him!

25. omg, I have been waiting for this day!
Ok, I'm a lifer Ranger fan. Richter is not only my favorite Ranger goalie of all time, he is also a great guy, a real liberal and has been involved and studying politics for quite a while. He was getting a degree at Columbia in political science while he was still playing. Even while a Ranger he wouldn't shut up about his political views (or shut up period, the guy loves to talk, heh). I knew he would run for office eventually.

I would be supporting his campaign from over here in NY with tremendous enthusiasm!

:bounce:
