Baptist: Evangelicals Doubt Giuliani

By ROSE FRENCH
The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A Southern Baptist leader said Tuesday that evangelical
voters might tolerate a divorced presidential candidate, but they have deep
doubts about GOP hopeful Rudy Giuliani, who has been married three times.

Richard Land, head of public policy for the Southern Baptist Convention, told
The Associated Press that evangelicals believe the former New York City mayor
showed a lack of character during his divorce from second wife, television
personality Donna Hanover.

"I mean, this is divorce on steroids," Land said. "To publicly humiliate your
wife in that way, and your children. That's rough. I think that's going to be
an awfully hard sell, even if he weren't pro-choice and pro-gun control."

Giuliani married his longtime companion, Judith Nathan, in 2003. They had
dated publicly while Giuliani was married to Hanover. His first marriage
ended in an annulment.

1. Think what Newt did to his exwives.
But then Romney can claim fidelity as he looks forward to being God on his own planet!

2. OK, fair enough about Newt, but that's a cheap anti-Mormon shot
The Mormon's notion that they're going to wind up as God for a planet is no more ludicrous than other Christians' notion that they're going to sit on clouds, wearing wings and playing a harp, singing to God. You start getting into people's supernatural beliefs and they're ALL silly.

3. I'm telling you, many of them would vote for Edwards over Guliani, Romney, or McCain, that's why

the Republicans will probably nominate Hagel, if they have a brain.

4. And the Baptists SHOULD doubt Giuliani if they expect him to be another *.
Giuliani does whatever Giuliani wants, not what a constituency wants.

Giuliani is not a reborn Christian (or claims to be). He is not interested in using the government to promote their goals through legislation or persecuting individuals who don't share their narrow goals.

Giuliani is Catholic. They aren't crazy about Catholics generally.

Giuliani is thrice married, the most recent spouse being a Jew. With the exception of Israel, Jerry Falwell Baptists are not crazy about Jews (God doesn't hear their prayers, etc.)

Giuliani is an elite from the Northeast, a Yankee. A majority of the Baptists are southern, the Civil War is still an active controversy and they don't totally trust "Northerners". And let's face it, Giuliani can't drawl like *.

Intrinsically, they KNOW that Giuliani through force of will can't control Congress if both Houses are controlled by the democrats. He doesn't have the connections in D.C. to handle the intrigue necessary to manipulate the media, etc. and it's a fact that Giuliani doesn't "make friends" easily.

6. Is being a companion with another for 4 years considered longtime?
They supposedly met sometime in 1999.

7. They will all vote for their nominee, regardless.
As if in lockstep, even for Rudy. They know the drill.
