Craig Crawford’s Trail Mix: Another Rovian Scandal

Craig Crawford’s Trail Mix: Another Rovian Scandal

By Craig Crawford
Published: March 12, 2007

Once again, all roads lead to Karl Rove. Hardly a scandal goes by in the Bush administration without somebody pointing to the president’s political guru, and sure enough Rove is at center stage in the flap over recent firings of federal prosecutors that some allege were politically inspired.

Even the White House now acknowledges Rove’s role in the firings, following a story by McClatchy newspapers reported over the weekend. According to the story, New Mexico Republican Party Chairman Allen Weh in 2005 complained about the pace of U.S. Attorney David Iglesias’ probe into alleged corruption by a local Democrat. Weh said that Rove responded, “He’s gone.”

Iglesias was, in fact, fired after the 2006 elections, along with seven U.S. attorneys in other states under circumstances that provoked criticism of political mischief.

Now that Rove is involved, what had so far seemed like more of Washington’s run-of-the-mill partisan squabbling is destined to become a full-blown scandal that reaches well beyond the Beltway.

A picture is worth a thousand words: Cheney and Gonzales

Isn't it time to investigate Rove?

1. I am REALLY liking Craig Crawford now that he's showing his leanings
OK, call it bias, whatever. He used to try and walk the plank, but now that he's come over to "our side," I REALLY, REALLY enjoy his commentaries, both written and on-air.

Crawford arrived in Washington in 1989 as a reporter for the Orlando Sentinel. He was the newspaper’s Washington bureau chief from 1989 to 1997. Before becoming a journalist, he served in 1984 as the Alabama State Field Director for the John Glenn presidential primary campaign, and the Georgia State Field Director for the Mondale/Ferraro general election campaign.

Crawford’s first experience in Washington began as a high school student, when he served as a page in the U.S. Senate during the Watergate scandal. Later, while a college student, he worked as a staffer in the White House Press Office during President Jimmy Carter’s Administration.
