Edwards to Suspend Campaign
Edwards to Suspend Campaign

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

On a side note, compare how Edwards is handling this to how Newt handled his sick wife.

6. I was afraid of that.
This week an old friend passed away after a long battle with the big C.

I sure hope she does OK.

10. Hope Elizabeth gets well soon.
John Edwards is showing himself to be a loving, caring, supportive father and husband which is way more than any of these Rethugs have ever shown toward their families (Newt and Rudy, for example). I really hope this recurrence is not serious and Elizabeth gets better soon.

14. Damn, I'm truly sorry to hear about Mrs. Edwards health...such a
wonderful person. I'm no fan of Edwards...but I'm still sorry for him to have him drop out for this reason. If he thinks he can be best for America...he should be able to campaign to the best of his ability...and if we were to beat him...I would want it to be fair and square.

I'm afraid there are going to be a lot of heartbroken Edwardites...as there were a lot of heart broken Clarkies when Clark had to drop out.
We can feel their pain and it isn't nice. It will be even harder on them because they will not only lose Edwards...but they could lose their/our beloved Elizabeth who is a real treasure that I think everyone admires and thinks she'd be a wonderful first lady.

A word of encouragement is that lots of people recover completely from breast cancer and Edwards is young enough to make another run in the future to pursue his dream. I pray for them both...especially Elizibeth...bless her soul!

15. Very sorry to hear that...
Elizabeth Edwards is a great person and I am sure she will overcome this. What makes it double sad is that she has to go through this again, and the country is going to again be denied Edwards' services, no matter what form they take...

20. I am so sorry to hear this.
I had not yet settled on any particular candidate, but I was certainly looking forward to Edwards contributions to the primaries and perfectly willing to support him if he won the nomination.

And not to forget, Ms. Edwards is a formidable force in her own right.

What a heartbreaking development.

25. ??? He is not suspending the campaign.
His is in NY tonight for a fundraiser; they said this on CNN an hour ago. Apparently he and Elizabeth have decided not to suspend at least for now.
