Dry pet food producers also received chemical-tainted supply
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-30-pet-food-recall_N.htm?csp=24

By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY
The contamination in wet pet food that has injured and killed pets across the country may not have been the pesticide aminopterin but possibly a fertilizer and plastics agent called melamine, the Food and Drug Administration now says.
In a news conference Friday morning, the FDA announced that its labs had detected melamine in samples of the pet food, in the wheat gluten used to make it and in the urine and kidneys of cats who were injured by it.

FDA investigators are not certain how melamine would sicken or kill dogs and cats; there is little scientific information available about melamine exposure in animals.

ON DEADLINE: What is melamine?

2. Call your lawmakers and ask them to regulate what animals eat
I called the FDA today and they told me that's what we need to do. I think this extends beyond just pet food - it's what animals in the food supply eat, too (witness mad cow disease).

3. They think it is in dry pet food also
but they will not give the name of the company. All the FDA is saying is that it is an American company and they will conduct further tests on the food before telling us who it is. Makes you wonder if it is Purina or one of the big corporations and they do not want the shareholders to take a hit with a recall. Time will tell. They will have to tell us sooner or later. Here is a link to melamine info:

4. I needed to take one of my cats
to the vet yesterday (flea infestation)and he mentioned that a younger dog in his practice died last summer from kidney failure, and now he wonders if it wasn't tainted dog food. I have a feeling that if vets across the country were to speak up, we'd find out that hundreds, maybe thousands of animals have been sickened.

A friend in Colorado last summer fed her dog some of the now-known-to-be-tainted brand of dog food, and he was sick for a week. She said it had also smelled rather nasty. She switched to a different kind of wet food and he's been okay ever since, but said she's quite seriously thinking of making up her own batches of food for him.

6. I wonder how long this has been gong on?
Maybe this is why my dog died in September of 2006. They never really did know what the problem was - blamed in on the quickest, easiest to find culprit.
