I'm sorry. I'm not an Imus fan - but why is everyone piling on this guy. I know he said something that was very objectionable - but he did say he's sorry (more than once) and he is getting suspended. Today this Rutgers press conference was brutal. I know that the issue is racism and sexism - but I feel a little bit for Imus that he does have a show that is considered 'comedy'. He has the reputation of being a 'shock jock' - he doesn't profess to be a 'political talking head' like Rush, Hannity, et.al.
What I'm really upset about though is how Imus has been piled on and people like Rush and Coulter continue to get away with much of the same and maybe even worse.
Rush is sexist and racist - and I don't think he even hides that. Ann Coulter called John Edwards a fag. She got some publicity for a few days - and I'm sure it boosted sales of her latest book. Why don't these people ever have to say they are sorry? Why don't they ever get suspended? or be made an example of? or lose their jobs?
What I'm hoping that comes out of this whole mess is that people like Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Beck, Savage, etc, etc, etc, are also put on notice that we will listen more carefully to them in the future and give them a taste of the Imus treatment.
I'm sure that if I put out the question to all you DU'ers - that you would come up with quotes by all of the above that are as objectionable or worse than what Imus is now being eviscerated for.
