The 2008 Election,................. An "optimistic" view?
--- Seeing as how the six months since the 2006 election have not exactly been very good ones for the still-crumbling Bush neocon junta of an administration,.. possibly even worse, in fact,.. looking forward to the 2008 election is becoming more and more encouraging. Can we just follow that train of thought with a few rosy speculations for a moment?

--- Okay,... let's posit first of all that a democrat is elected president. Hell, let's even say that we pick up another thirty seats in the House, giving the democrats a 60% majority there,.... and another net gain of four or five for a 55 - 45 advantage in the Senate. (Screw Lieberman) And since we're speculating wildly anyway, let's even go so far as to dream that a republican Supreme Court Justice gets drunk and drives his car into a concrete wall at 75 mph the day after innauguration. Still with me?

--- So,... where does that leave us? Free and clear? The neocon curse lifted? Things back to normal? Would happy days, in fact, be here again?

--- Nope,.. not for me, they wouldn't. That victory would afford all the relief and gratification of the Iran-Contra pardons. There's no point in dealing with political criminals in a "catch-and-release" fashion. We have to teach them a lesson,.. one that will leave a searing memory to act as a deterrent in the future. We have to make "shock and awe" believers out of the neo-nazis,.. as well as a few of their corporate enablers.

--- Now,.. I realize that democrats are supposed to be more civilized than to be extracting a pound of flesh. I know that non-violence and pacifism are big items around here. Vindictiveness a non-starter, for sure, eh? But folks,... these people tried to destroy the United States of America, lock, stock and Constitution. Quaint ideas like majority rule were too inconvenient for the entitled aristocracy. And it was they who first decided that they preferred the Law of the Jungle to the Constitutional rule of Law as propounded by our Founding Fathers. Just imagine for a moment that there are people in this country who are so wealthy and privileged that the Constitution isn't good enough for them. They want it all,... and they put together the PNAC to take it away from the rest of us.

--- Hate to put it this way,.. but we have to hurt them,.. inflict damage,.. take some of their pieces off the board. And to be sure, this sort of retribution would go a long way in reassuring the rest of the world that the US has truly spit out the neocon poison.

--- Prison sentences HAVE to be forthcoming. And more than two or three,.... more like twenty or thirty. (I'm trying to be nice,.. I'm very economical and prison costs money) And legal cases that drag on for a decade wouldn't help, either. I'd offer the principals a deal: Cop to a ten-year sentence right away,.. or find out how your Patriot Act works from the inside out. Ten years or oblivion, take your pick.

--- Right afterwards of course, the Patriot Act would be history.

--- No,.. I don't expect this to end up being the reality of 2009,... even if all the optimistic speculations came true. The political industry seems to observe "professional courtesy" rules. Too bad for us.

1. I agree that there have to be prosecutions with jail time.

I agree.

2. Parisle, even if this is just a daydream, sign me up
and I agree 1000% that it's time for retribution. Not so much to assuage whatever grievances we progressives may have, but for the sake of democracy itself. It's way past payback time for these thuggish, murdererous, barbaric, recidivist, treasonous miscreants.

4. Make the punishment fit the crime. Oh, yea
You are correct, sir. Making them pay dearly for their crimes will be a deterrent to future wrong-doers. The American people need us to clean up their government. If we don't, all hope is lost.
We need to restore integrity to our Federal Government.

The sooner the better.

6. I agree, to not throw Bush & others in jail would set a horrible example
If we let Bush and his cronies get away with all of their blatant power abuses and violations of the law then what's to stop someone else from doing what Bush did? We need to show that if you act like a dictator instead of a president and break all of these laws, violate the constitution who knows how many times, abuse your power both to commit illegal actions and to cover them up, and become really corrupt that you will be punished for it.

7. ...and Bush is all about punishment, eh?
--- From King Executioner in Texas,... to showing extremists what will happen to them if they raise a hand against America,... He damn sure knows he's got it coming. And you are right,... We must not fail to see that justice is carried out, and the law obeyed.
