DU GROUP PROPOSAL: Bill Richardson Group

In 1976 and 1992, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton respectively lept from 'second-tier' status in the primaries to win the Democratic nomination, and ultimately become President. If any Democrat pulls off that feat in 2008, my money would be on Bill Richardson to do that. Clinton, Edwards, Kucinich, and Obama each have groups here on DU, and I'd like to add Richardson to the mix. Try this group mission statement on for size:

The mission of the DU Bill Richardson Group is to discuss the current Governor of New Mexico and 2008 Presidential candidate. Members are invited to discuss Richardson’s role in the Democratic Party and the 2008 campaign; his wide range of experience in Congress, the Clinton Administration, and New Mexico’s Governorship; his positions on such issues as foreign affairs, the economy, and our environment; as well as campaign and media appearances, speeches, and writings. Members may also discuss ways to support the Richardson campaign. Only comments portraying support for Governor Richardson’s campaign, or projecting a positive view of his campaign, are welcome.

I have made no final decision on who I like for the primary, but I believe every Democrat running should be able to have their platform and candidacy discussed in a positive forum here at DU.

Richardson seems to be making constructive use of his time while the other candidates are sitting in Congress doing nothing. He's got my vote unless something major happens.

Richardson is at the top of the second tier, and is worthy of a group. Perhaps his supporters will post things that enlighten all of us about his positions through appearances, etc.

I haven't decided to support any particular candidate yet, but discussion is always a good thing and Richardson is definitely worthy of attention.

I just came to the conclusion last week that I prefer Richardson to any of the other announced candidates. I'm a little skeptical of his chance, but at this point it's wide open.

I haven't settled on donating to or working for anyone just yet--I'd like to see a few debates, but from what I've seen and heard from New Mexico residents, I like the guy.

A few suggestions to improve the chances of success for this group:

* Immediately go and start posting in the group! It helps a lot when groups get a good start with lots of posts.

* Get the word out on the message board about the new group. Feel free to post some threads/messages to let people know about the group.

* Make sure everyone in this thread is aware the group was created. Someone should probably send a private message to everyone who posted in this thread, to make sure they know the group has been created.

* Contact anyone else who you think might be interested to let them know about the group.
