Obama is divesting from Darfur
Divesting from Darfur
By Sam Graham-Felsen - May 18th, 2007 at 2:47 pm EDT
The slaughter in Darfur has raged on since 2003, killing an estimated 400,000 people and leaving over 2 million homeless. Little has been done by the world's leadership to bring an end to this tragic violence.

Yet a movement to divest from companies that help to prop up the genocidal Khartoum regime has been sweeping the nation. Student activists across the country have pressured their universities to divest, and several states have divested Sudan-related holdings from their state pension funds as well.

Each of us can do our part by checking our own personal investments. Barack and Michelle, using the Sudan Divestment Task Force Screening Tool, found that one of their mutual funds had a minor Sudan-related investment, and they promptly dropped it and reinvested in a clean company.

Barack has been one of the leading advocates for Darfur in the Senate, receiving an "A+" score from the Genocide Intervention Network's DarfurScores.org.

Barack understands that when it comes to crises like the bloodshed in Darfur, America can and should use its influence in the world for good.
