Obama Taps Wall Street for Dollars
WASHINGTON - Democrat Barack Obama, who has decried Wall Street profits and CEO pay, has tapped a vein of donors among bankers and financiers who have given generously and helped drive his successful presidential campaign sprint for cash.

Among the firms whose employees gave the most to Obama in the second quarter of the year were Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JP Morgan. Their money, much of it the maximum donation allowed by law, placed Obama in competition with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for high-finance dollars in her own backyard of New York.

12. Do you know how contributions work?
Do you think corporations are cutting huge checks and just handing them over to candidates...?

5. You forgot the two best paragraphs"
"It's really astounding to me that this underdog candidate is way out ahead in fundraising," said Michael Malbin, executive director of the nonpartisan Campaign Finance Institute. "He's running neck-and-neck with everybody else in large contributions. His advantage is in the small contributions."
. . .

Malbin said former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean used such grass-roots supporters effectively for fundraising during his 2004 presidential bid, but was unable to convert them into activists. President Bush, on the other hand, was less successful using the Internet to raise money as he was in building neighborhood networks.

"Obama appears to be trying to put the two halves of the circle together," he said."

9. This is an old, stale story...thanks for the Un-Update
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 02:58 AM by zulchzulu
Employees who work on Wall Street can contribute to whoever they want, last I checked. However, if someone works for Goldman Sachs and gives money to a candidate, it's not Goldman Sachs who gave the money.

Just pointing out the obvious in case you didn't get the memo...

11. You forgot Warren Buffet and Bill Gates
Obama is meeting with them as well.

Is this supposed to be bad?

Record setting numbers of individual small donors, the little guy. They think it's OK. They give with their hearts and minds. Record number of them. Why shouldn't Wall Streeters recognize the trend and join in? That's what they do.

Scoreboard, dudes.

21. The difference is HRC's camp does not portray her as the anti-establishment, "change" candidate
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 04:10 PM by draft_mario_cuomo
No one is surprised that HRC is doing well among fatcats and on Wall Street. We expect it. She and her camp do not try to pretend otherwise. Obama, though, poses as an agent of change. He is supposedly an ultra-progressive yet he is beloved by Wall Street and other fatcats who have a vested interest in preserving the status quo. He is sold as the anti-DLC. And so on. The mythology does not match up with the reality.

Nothing wrong with that. And he's holding a mega fundraiser for Obama in September. Look for an official endorsement for Barack. Warren's got Barack's back. He's given Hillary the shaft :bounce:

24. He stated he will be doing a fundraiser for Obama as well
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 06:59 PM by Ethelk2044
Last night's Warren Buffett event raised the campaign at least" $1 million, according to the Washington Post. Now Buffett has NOT endorsed Clinton. “But he has already donated the maximum $4,600 allowed by an individual to Clinton's presidential campaign. Buffett called Clinton ‘the person to run the country.’ He has not donated to any other candidate, according to public records, although he has said he would also support Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in a similar event.”

He stated he will let the voters decide.
