Hillarys' big Albatross(in my mind)....JANET RENO!
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 08:16 PM by Didereaux
The Clintons biggest albatross, millstone or whatever you choose to call it, in my mind is Janet Reno. She did exactly as Ashcroft and Gonzales did, she chose Executive Office influence over Constitutional or legal precedents, she condoned the Ruby Ridge fiasco by keeping on the architect of it. AND THE CLINTONS KEPT HER ON FOR 8 YEARS.

Don't give me any crap about it being Bill's fault alone, not even dead armadillos believe that Hillary did not have immense influence(not all of bad either) over policy and particularly personnel and appointments.

Now given any two way race or even three way that might end in a Democrat not being in the Whitehouse, I will vote for Hillary...but I will choke down a handful of anti-acid tabs before pulling that lever.
-------------------------------NOTE-------NOTE---NOTE---------
I have been duly disciplined and shown the error of my 'history'. Let it be now said that the reader should replace any reference to 'Ruby Ridge' with 'Waco'. Damned first error I ever made in over six decades ( and have I got a hedge fund for you)

Technically what I wrote is ABSOLUTE TRUTH very few if any of the people in ATF or FBI were disciplined over Ruby Ridge, and wasn'[t Frieh(?) a carry over from Bush 1 and kept on by Reno?

3. Janet Reno had nothing to do with Ruby Ridge!
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 08:00 PM by TheDebbieDee
She wasn't even the Attorney General when that Ruby Ridge incident went down.

The Ruby Ridge shoot-out was a fuck-up by the first * administration. Check your facts!

ETA: Ruby Ridge took place in August, 1992. Clinton didn't even take office til January 20, 1993.

10. It doesn't.
You're still saying an event of 15 years ago was all the fault of the then-AG, and because she wasn't fired, the woman who was then First Lady carries it around as HER albatross.

14. you are not understanding what I wrote....
sorry if my premise got lost in the side issue of who did what when...my main point is that JAnet reno was very strictly from the mold that believes in maximum Executive powers. Isn't that one of the problems that we are facing today. We have had no AG who holds that the off of the Atty Gen is the office that supports the laws of the US, and the Constitution as defined by its courts. I realize that the Ashcroft/Mitchell/Reno school has a huge advantage in numbers, but there have been AG's in the past that made the choice to do their jobs as defined by Law and Constitution and not by fiat of Executive wish.

Some of you history buffs who so enjoyed bashing my little faux pas on ruby Ridge might now show us your stuff and give us the names of at least two AGs in the past 50 years who fit the 'honest' definition.

19. It's not a little faux pas
It's a very common mistake right wing militia fanatics make, fwiw.

Janet Reno is also accused of playing politics for the Clintons and not being tough enough on terrorism which allowed 9.11 to happen.

The right needs to make up their mind.

They are also the ones who support the increased policing of the country, excessive punishments, etc. - until it's a Democratic administration in a position of power, be it local, state or federal. Then the Democrats are a bunch of nanny state busybodies who need to just leave everybody alone.

I much prefer the Janet Reno FBI than the Ashcroft/Gonzales FBI. If you don't, you need to pay closer attention to what actually went on and less attention to right wing fanatics.

20. Executive powers?
She also let Fiske and then Starr "investigate" President Clinton from one phony "scandal" to another to another until the "Arkansas Project" found something to use in their efforts to take him down. She NEVER protected nor empowered Clinton the way the Chimp has been protected and empowered by his AG. (And I'd still say Gonzales is not the fault of Laura Bush.)

Mr. Clinton and his supporters have long accused Mr. Starr of straying too far from his original mandate. That the impeachment report relies almost exclusively on the Lewinsky episode and ignores whole areas of the long investigation is almost certain to be seized upon by some Clinton allies as evidence that the independent counsel has no real case to make other than one involving private matters that would not ordinarily be prosecuted.

But supporters of Mr. Starr noted today that he had taken on all new areas of inquiry only with the approval of Attorney General Janet Reno. They also pointed to the narrow focus of the impeachment charges as a sign that Mr. Starr had conducted a fair investigation.

(snip)

That was not the only time that the Attorney General approved an expansion of Mr. Starr's mandate. In 1996, she agreed to expand the inquiry to include an examination of whether two Arkansas bankers had improperly funneled money into one of Mr. Clinton's campaigns for governor. The bankers were ultimately acquitted of some of the charges, and prosecutors agreed to drop the remainder of the case.

Ms. Reno also approved an expansion of the inquiry to include a look at the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of the White House travel office and any role Mrs. Clinton played in the affair. And in the summer of 1996, she asked the special court overseeing the independent counsel to expand his authority to examine whether any laws had been broken by the White House's possession of hundreds of F.B.I. personnel files on Republicans, both prominent and obscure.

Those inquiries have yielded no indictments.
