Democrats to run radio ads against GOP

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As President Bush prepares to brandish his veto pen, House Democrats are wasting no time in criticizing him and several Republicans who oppose the SCHIP health care legislation.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has purchased a week’s worth of radio advertising targeting eight GOP House members for voting against the health insurance program for children, a DCCC source tells CNN. The ads will note the lawmakers are covered by a taxpayer health care plan, but oppose this program.

Congress recently approved the bill, but Bush has promised to veto it.

The source would not reveal how much money the DCCC is spending on the ads, but noted Democrats will be running 15-second spots around traffic and weather reports in districts represented by Ohio Rep. Steve Chabot, Virginia Rep. Thelma Drake, Florida Rep. Tom Feeney, Missouri Rep. Sam Graves, Michigan Rep. Joe Knollenberg and New Jersey Rep. Jim Saxton. Sixty-second ads will be run against New York Rep. Randy Kuhl and Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg....

1. Child at 25?
I belive the real sticking point is the extension of coverage of a "childs program" to include adults up to the age of 25. This is supposed to be a childs program. If you want to discuss government sponcered health care for adults then it should be in a seperate bill. Not clouding the issue of a childrens program. In the long run it will hurt only the children.

2. Jiminy cricket
You pack it all into that post. Anyway do you know under what circumstances a 25 year old qualifies under this program? I'd bet that you don't. Here's a hint for ya though: Almost all college students are 18 years of age or older and still on their parents insurance plan.

9. perhaps I didn't make my point clearly.

My point is that if the U.S. Government wants to debate spending tax payer money to cover health costs for adults up to the age of 25 it should be done on a seperat bill. To wage this debate on, and possibly hold up, a program intended for children is NOT appropriat.

The fact that many private insurance programs cover young adults up to the age of 23, if attending college, is NOT germane to the SCHIP program. Nor should it be.

4. Cave?
Not having a large enough majority to overcome a veto is not caving. Our majority in Congress is very slim.

And I suppose running all those ads is caving, too.

I am sick and tired of the defeatist posts on DU.

If you want things to change, contact the repukes in or near your district. Call your Democratic representatives and let them know you appreciate their support for this bill. And vote for Democrats in the next election.

6. Yes ... cave
And if you think the Dem majority is slim now, just wait until the House flips in '08 thanks to the fraud perpetrated by the "slim majority".

5. We were able to keep our children on our insurance
until they were 23, as long as they were full-time students. When our oldest took a year off before grad school, they would not cover her any more.

A friend of hers was born with a heart defect. She qualified for surgery and follow-up care under a state program. She had to go back in for surgery when she was 21 or 22. She still got the care.

When she was married and over 25, she could not get any insurance, because she had a pre-existing condition. That is as terrible a burden for her and her young husband as her heart condition and their student loans.

Would you like to be a young person in our society with illness and debt and no protection?

8. Good! We can spend $10 billion a MONTH in Iraq, but we can't spent $7billion more a YEAR for SCHIP!
Disgraceful, Republicans!
