Edwards is Top Presidential Contender in Missouri (followed by Obama)
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Democrat John Edwards is the most popular United States presidential candidate for voters in the Show Me State, according to a poll by SurveyUSA released by KCTV-TV. At least 47 per cent of respondents in Missouri would vote for the former North Carolina senator in head-to-head contests against three prospective Republican rivals.

Edwards leads former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani by five points, actor and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson by 10 points, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney by 14 points.

In other contests, Illinois senator Barack Obama is also ahead of the three GOP contenders, while New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton trails Giuliani, but leads both Thompson and Romney.

In 2004, Republican George W. Bush carried Missouri’s 11 electoral votes, with 53 per cent of all cast ballots. Aside from the 1956 presidential election, the Show Me State has picked the eventual winner in every contest since 1900.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
