NM Sen- Chavez Running
"Marty Chavez, looking for a quick takeoff and hoping to discourage other major contenders, will formally announce his bid for the 2008 Democratic US Senate nomination Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Eclipse Aviation in ABQ."

However, I have been reading posts on other blogs and it doesn't sound like progressives like him at all, which is mentioned later in this article

"Chavez has had major problems with the large progressive wing of the Democratic Party. They have been banding behind Santa Fe developer Don Wiviott who has pledged $400,000 of his own cash for the race. Can Chavez heal the wounds and start unifying the party, or will more candidates get in and complicate the matter and snare the Mayor in a bloody battle?"

Interesting. This is a seat we need.

1. a lot of progressives despise him

and I understand that. He has sided pretty consistently with the conservatives on the city council. Yet he also was an early Howard Dean supporter and I don't know which side of him would win out if he became a U.S. senator, but between Marty and either Pearce or, more likely, Heather Wilson, Chavez would be preferable. Its possible that large numbers of progressives would just not vote if he's the candidate; seeing him the same way some progressives view Clinton, as just another Business as usual, corporate Democrat. Its hard for me to be totally objective, having known him since about 1979. Mostly as an acquaintance, but those first couple of years, we actually hung out occasionally, before he went into politics. I've always liked him personally, but certainly understand progressive Dems not liking or trusting him. I see more good in him than most of my friends, but I really can't tell if that's just because I want to. I hope NM Dems will stick together and FINALLY win this seat . Like the case with Hillary, who I don't like at all, when election day rolls around, I hope at least most progressives suck it up and vote for what they perceive as the lesser of two evils, as distasteful as doing that AGAIN will be, because the greater evil really is a hell of a lot more evil than even the lamest corporate DLC Dem. For myself, I was really hoping Tom Udall was going to run; a good man and probably a more solid chance than Marty to win.
