CBS) WESTMONT, Ill. The Illinois Federation of Teachers endorsed Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for president Saturday.
Obama's leadership in both the Illinois General Assembly and the United States Senate, and his voting record on issues important to all working men and women, were key factors in the IFT endorsement.
"On the critical issues facing our country - from creating a health care system that works to supporting public schools and increasing access to higher education to ending the war - Barack Obama's beliefs and his record of public service place him above a strong field of candidates," said IFT President Ed Geppert Jr.
During his time in the Illinois General Assembly, Senator Obama's voting record topped 90 percent on legislation important to the union.
The Illinois Federation of Teachers previously endorsed Obama in his campaigns for the Illinois State Senate and was the first major organization to endorse Obama in the 2004 primary election campaign for the U.S. Senate seat he holds.
The IFT is an AFL-CIO- affiliated union representing more than 90,000 teachers, education workers and public employees in Illinois.
