In Dover, Edwards speaks about global warming
In Dover, Edwards speaks about global warming
By Aaron Sanborn--Foster's Daily Democrat
Monday, October 15, 2007

----
DOVER — While Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards seemed more than willing to address any issue during a visit to Dover Sunday afternoon, global warming remained first and foremost among them.

In fact, prior to speaking to the crowd of about 100 people gathered on the front yard of Jennifer Peterson's Dover Point Road home, Edwards was endorsed by the president of Friends of the Earth Action, a national environmental organization.

Edwards said a national cap is needed on carbon emissions, one that should reinforced every year. By doing so, Edwards hopes carbon emissions would decrease by at least 80 percent, however, he admitted it may need to drop even further due to the severity of the problem.

"We need to make the polluters pay," Edwards said. "Any of these big corporations sending out these greenhouse gases, make them buy a permit, that will produce at least 30 billion dollars and that money should be invested in wind, solar…clean renewable sources of energy."

Edwards said he's also against liquefying coal and adding more nuclear power plants, something he said sets him apart from his Democratic counterparts Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

"We cannot spend and innovate our way out of this problem, we're going to have to be willing to sacrifice, we have to conserve, in our homes, workplace, we need to be willing to drive more fuel-efficient vehicles," he said.
(...)
Using Iran as an example, Edwards talked about a Senate vote two weeks ago asking to declare the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, a military group in Iran, a terrorist group. Edwards called it a Bush-Cheney motivated move, and noted U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton voted for it.
(...)
The cost of Edwards' aggressive plan would be 90-120 billion dollars, which he said would be paid for by eliminating Bush's tax cuts to those who make over $200,000.

He also touched on No Child Left Behind, saying it needs to be drastically retooled and if that fails to work, needs to be eliminated.

Doug Karo, of Durham, said none of this year's candidates are flawless but feels Edwards is the honest one.

1. I like everything he says, but the no child left behind. I was wondering
if there are any school teachers that would way in on how this should be retooled.. I can only imagine that smaller class rooms would be the best for both teacher and student.
