GOP targeting Clinton on phone-call snooping
The Hill: GOP targeting Clinton on phone-call snooping
By Alexander Bolton
October 16, 2007

Republicans plan to seize on an allegation from the 1992 presidential campaign to tarnish Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) on the red-hot issue of government surveillance. Government surveillance will be at the forefront of the political debate this fall as congressional Democrats and President Bush square off over legislation allowing electronic spying on U.S. soil without a warrant.

Republicans are focusing on an allegation in a recent book by two Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, which suggests Clinton listened to a secretly recorded conversation between political opponents.

In their book about Clinton’s rise to power, Her Way, Don Van Natta Jr., an investigative reporter at The New York Times, and Jeff Gerth, who spent 30 years as an investigative reporter at the paper, wrote: “Hillary’s defense activities ranged from the inspirational to the microscopic to the down and dirty. She received memos about the status of various press inquiries; she vetted senior campaign aides; and she listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics plotting their next attack.

“The tape contained discussions of another woman who might surface with allegations about an affair with Bill,” Gerth and Van Natta wrote in reference to Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton. “Bill’s supporters monitored frequencies used by cell phones, and the tape was made during one of those monitoring sessions.”...

1. That's their game plan to beat her? Old laundry from 1992?
Hillary had better start measuring the drapes in the West Wing.

3. This is a novel way to get something in the paper.
A Republican operative can go around peddling old shit and papers will say, "that was in your book. That's hardly news."

But the same operative can shop the "news" story that republicans are planning to "use" the same story, so it is magically news because it's about what republicans are doing today, not about Hillary in 1992.

Many reporters are just press agents.

4. I am telling you. She has been swift boated for 15-20 Years
And she is tough by now. But isn't it just like the republicans to try to dig up 20 year old dirt.

I can't understand the obsession that the republicans have with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Unless Bill Clinton turned out to be 1000 times more popular than either of the bushes'. After he won against the old man bush they went bat shit crazy trying to bring him down.

The republicans have been a cancer on this country since Reagan was in office. He is the one who started this. He was mentally deficient with Alzheimer's and let the corrupt regime run him. And it kept on since then.

5. Oh goodness, if it's from Gerth then it's true, BS
Most likely the other fellow is the same silly sombitch from Americian Spectator that wrote all the lies about Clinton in 92, 93.Hell, anyone with common sense would know the right wing would come after her with something sexual about Bill.I suspect that Bill and Hillary know this was coming and have protected themselves against this with accurate accounts of where, who Bill meant with and at the proper time will present said evidence and smear the right wing zealots......
As HRC and Bill have both said, " she will not be swiftboated".....

See Gerth's failed pursuits of Whitewater, technology transfers to China, and Wen Ho Lee.)
