I think I am going to vote for all Republicans this time.
If I give the Republicans my vote, they might be so grateful that I gave it to them that they do what I say with all my progressive values. I would have voted them in, so would they represent me, just as we expect the Democrats in Congress to do whatever we say or else they are betraying us.

Remember, just because something has no chance of working, it doesn't matter as long as you have the right intentions in mind.

But you're right on target. Isn't there a saying about right intentions and the road to hell?

2. My God , you can't be serious, either that or you have not been a
...democrat very long. Republicans will take all of your progressive values into the public rest rooms with them, stuff them in the toilet, shit and piss on them, push the flusher and run out faster then the backup sewage along with your progressive values can run all over stinking up everything. :hurts:

4. My vote is mine, and I will have elected them based on progressive values.
It is for them to represent me and the rest of the progressive grassroots.

8. Okay, so you are serious and I then presume that as a progressive
...democrat you will vote for republicans who will support these particular issues and causes:

o a sustainable environment,
o anti-war and peace organizations,
o labor rights,
o women's rights,
o human rights,
o and so on.

So, you will find groups working on these particular issues and form coalitions that are based on common self-interest to work toward a particular program or policy initiative. Those groups will then come out and give full endorsement and their vote to republicans who give their word that if elected will in fact vote for those issues. Is that what you believe will happen?

10. Actually, none of those.
The whole point is that because of my vote, they will owe me one and should change their positions.

Listen, we all have our own way of taking a stand.

In a way, my vote represents hope, rather than fear, because I am voting for who I hope to change, rather than against who I fear will not.

13. Wow, aren't you being just a bit naive? Your individual vote is secret
...and furthermore it is just a single voice among a constituency of hundreds of thousands in the case of representatives and millions when it comes to state senators. When was the last time any federal elected person gave you a personal audience and listened to your views and acted on them? Truthfully never, not be audience, not by letter not by email. We do not have representative democracy in this country for individuals and we hardly have it for special interest groups or even PACS.

All that matters is money and power!

What can you financially contribute and where is your army?

He/she/it is trying to satirize people who choose to vote their conscience instead of voting where the corporate money tells them to vote.

Just ignore it and it will go away...

31. Considering that Tank man is one of the few people I would consider a hero...
Comparing me to the type who would stop him is beyond ludicrous, even by your own low standards. You're more like the ones DRIVING the tanks than the one with the guts to stand in front of them. You embarrass yourself utterly when you compare yourself to that man.And I would think you're running out of ways to make a fool of yourself.

36. so, let's keep following this amusing allegory.
Tank Man stood up to a brutal regime slaughtering its own citizens by putting his body in the way of a tank.

You're obsessed with the actions of some frustrated progressives seven years ago and posting about it in an online forum.

Yes, you're exactly like Tank Man.

The way they're going now on the road to self-destruction you won't have much of a chance later on after they cease to exist. Right now people are bailing out of the GOP because they don't want to be associated with a band of thieves, liars and sex offenders.

24. heh! I see exactly where you're going with this.
It isn't written anywhere, nor does history show, that the Democratic party is or should be a bastion of progressive ideals. Sure, it has been more progressive than the GOP for about 80 years, but the party is under no obligation to conform to the strict definition of progressive that a small subset is dictating.

On the other hand, that small subset is under no obligation to vote for the Democratic party.

Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 10:44 AM by Rhythm and Blue
Nothing he has said is serious. It's all an act. His OP is making fun of the current anger at the Democrats and the threats to take their votes elsewhere (and by doing so create some sort of change). His Tank Man business is making fun of the holier-than-thou self-martyrdom that people here tend to go off on. Everything here is a parody of commonly-posted ideas here. I'm mildly surprised you haven't picked up on that.

33. Let's see if I get it
In other words, we have no right to expect candidates we voted for to represent our interests over their own, especially if it involved pursuing a strategy that "has no chance of working", like, say, impeachment, which after all can't work because "the votes aren't there" because there have been no investigations or public hearings which might put damaging facts on the table and lead to political pressure for impeachment like, say, Watergate. Or the Iraq occupation, which can't be ended without a veto-proof majority of 67 votes because after all if there's no funding bill either A-we don't support the troops and can't get re-elected or B-Bush leaves the troops in place without funding to be slaughtered but even then we can't impeach because of ...(see above)
