John Edwards is still in the hunt
COLUMBUS, Ky. - John Edwards came to this Civil War town, 40 miles southwest of Paducah, to fulfill a promise and to make a point. Columbus, whose population would barely fill a movie theater, had won an online contest, defeating such cities as Los Angeles and Seattle, for the right to host an Edwards campaign visit.

Arriving right on time, the former senator from North Carolina stepped out of his rented minivan. The crowd of 2,000 roared. "In my lifetime there's never been a presidential candidate that's come down here to these river counties," said Bill Ferguson, 69, of nearby Arlington.

Edwards spoke on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River near where the Ohio River feeds into it. "Rural America is who I am, part of who I am," he said, twice. "I know who you are. I care about what you care about."

And although he did not say so explicitly, his presence said something else for him: Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton would not campaign here, because she can't carry Columbus, and neither can Barack Obama.

2. Good news, he would be a great President IMO..
I'm thinking seriously about voting for him in the primary, but that would be the kiss of death, as I've NEVER in my 25 years of voting picked a winner.

7. That was a great video -
It shows that JRE is willing to meet with everybody and not afraid to be asked the tough questions. The republican leaning guy laid it on kinda thick, but I'm sure he handled it with ease.

I love hearing Edwards speak, it's like listening to an adult after so many years of listening to a baby wail. :hi:

8. Edwards can't win there either. Just because he goes there doesn't change that.

Does anyone seriously think Edwards has any shot whatsoever in Kentucky?
Bush won Kentucky with 60% of the vote in 2004, with an even bigger margin than his 2000 win.
All this shows is that Edwards is willing to waste time in unwinnable places just to push this false notion that he's more electable than the other top candidates.
Hillary or Obama could go to Columbus, Kentucky and get a bigger crowd, but they don't do that because they know it would just be a waste of time.

10. Yes, I do. Kentucky right now is a beehive of very dissatisfied Republicans.

The Democrats ran a good race against the mindless Jim Bunning. We're done well in Congressional districts there currently or recently held by Republicans.

McConnell's numbers are down.

Anti-Bush sentiment generaly and anti-Iraq War sentiment especially are way up.

Democratic candidate for governor leads Republican candidate for govenor by double figures.

I think we contend for Kentucky at all levels in 08, and of our candidates, I think Edwards would haul in the highest vote totals.

9. Anybody remember that Houston/Bills game in the NFL some years back?
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 08:23 AM by Old Crusoe
Ok, it was a while ago. Don Shula was still coaching the Dolphins.

Anyway, the lead went from one team pretty far down to that team surging back in the last quarter to dominate the first half leader.

You don't have to lead for the entire game to win the game. Sometimes it happens that way and sometimes it doesn't.

The Democratic primary races are almost always a gambler's finish. There are more people trailing in summer and fall prior to Iowa and New Hampshire who go on to overtake leaders and become nominees.

Edwards is very well positioned for just that sort of outcome. HClinton is formidable but I just don't see her holding those numbers through the Iowa caucuses.

I believe John Edwwards, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden are the likely top three placers in Iowa, and I think it's gonna be real, real close differentials among the 3.
