We Can't Even Hand * One Defeat........
I was really hoping that after yesterday's press conference more Repugs would get behind the Dems and hand * a defeat on this SCHIP vote. * has been having his way for the last 6 years and it would be nice to hand him one defeat and take him down a notch - but we can't even get a majority on something as 'apple pie and American' as helping children.

I tuned into CSPAN yesterday and listened to a Dem Senator explain the SCHIP vote and how * has it wrong. When * talked about SCHIP he made it sound almost plausible as to why it should be defeated - but as always * was lying or spinning the interpretation and I really didn't hear any Dem get on a news channel and explain why * was wrong.

So all people heard was *'s spin and heard it a number of times - both from * and RW talking heads.

No wonder * is arrogant and smirking. He wins everything. He never gets taken down.

I don't know if I can stand another 15 months with this man in office.

And now he's even setting us up for another debacle - Iran and WWIII.

Everybody knows that this is what he is doing and they are powerless to stop him.

Barbara Boxer said it and was right on yesterday when she question his 'stability' as she said the following:

BOXER: Well, I hate to say it and I‘m just trying to be careful of my words, but the president just doesn‘t seem to be in command of the facts or what he‘s trying to say. I don‘t think he understands that his words, you know, have to be measured. And it‘s quite unfortunate.

I don‘t see a strategy other than, you know, we talk about scaring people and holding out the prospect of war. And you would think if he had, you know, good fortune with the war that he brought us on false pretenses, he‘d be chastened by it. It seems like he‘s, you know, revving up again, and it worries me very much. I don‘t find it particularly stable. I mean, I‘m just—I‘m very concerned.

MATTHEWS: You think he‘s unstable?

BOXER: I didn‘t say that. I think that his speaking—what he said doesn‘t give you the sense that he has a focus or a strategy. It seems he‘s always talking about war instead of some way to explain that there are things we can do in this world.

I think Boxer really meant * is unstable - but didn't want to be quoted as such. But the truth of the matter is is that * is unstable and has his hand on the button. Again everybody knows this - but they are powerless or just plain chicken to try and stop him.

It seems to me the only way is to have some of the Repugs gather some guts and continually hand * some defeats - but maybe they know something about his instability that suggests that they just better play along because the alternative would be worse.

maybe they don't want the American people to panic, but we all can see it, we are not stupid. This man is a threat to society, and he must be apprehended before he starts another invasion, he is defiant and just does not give a shit, and in the meantime we have Cheney, impeach both their asses. We are talking about our security here.

3. Sen. Reid wanted Bush to have the opportunity to "save face."
There is no more to compromise,” Mr. Reid said. But a moment later he said he would be willing to see “tweaks” in the bill’s language “if the president wants to save face,” provided that the final version of the bill covers 10 million children, its sponsors’ goal, which would be an increase of some 4 million.

NYT

So it appears Bush was able to "save face" with the help of Congress...

6. Rubbish.
We don't have the votes and making a few tweaks to TRY to get more republicans on board is hardly something to be ashamed of unless you care more about Reid never, ever, compromising so we never, ever have a shot at overriding this asshole.

4. Who is "we"?
The Democrats voted for this and got 44 Republicans to vote with them. There were only 2 defectors.

WE DON'T HAVE THE VOTES.

And has for this "saving face" nonsense:

Most of the Democratic leadership has shown little inclination to negotiate with the White House, beyond offering to make “tweaks” in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program so the president could “save face,” as Mr. Reid put it recently. Democrats in Congress said Wednesday that they would pass a new bill, but were willing to adjust it to address some White House concerns.

Doesn't sound like Reid is selling out to me, making a few "tweaks" to try to save an important bill, for chrissakes.

“Each Republican who voted to uphold President Bush’s heartless veto should be embarrassed that he chose to stand in the way of improving the lives of millions of America’s poorest children,” Mr. Reid said. “While we appreciate those who voted to override his veto, there unfortunately remain too many who are all too willing to rubber-stamp President Bush’s shameful policies and succumb to his misinformation campaign.”

Mr. Emanuel was defiant. “In the coming days, Democrats will not back down and we will insist on providing health care coverage to these 10 million children,” he said.

12. excellent post. good analysis and to the point....
I, too, am upset by the fact that we haven't been able to have any one victory since Nov. 2006...it seems as if we should have been able to show that smug b*st*rd that we (the Democrats in Congress) mean what we say. But, alas, we do have some chicken-sh*t people there who refuse to do battle with him. Let's keep trying to get them to push him against the wall. The *ss is enjoying the same popularity Nixon had when he left office. It boggles the mind that Congress won't take him on.
