It wasn't that long ago that Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, took a lot of razzing from fellow labor leaders.
"In November and December, some of my friends were calling and asking what it feels like to be on the Titanic," Schaitberger chortled in a recent interview.
Now, Schaitberger's "Titanic," the John Kerry presidential campaign, is steaming into port, while labor unions that backed Democrats whose campaigns have foundered are looking for the lifeboats.
Today, organized labor is expected to stage an official, if belated, display of unity as the AFL-CIO announces its endorsement of the Massachusetts senator at a Washington news conference and rally.
