Barack Obama addresses crowd of 6,000 at ASU

Presidential candidate Barack Obama told nearly 6,000 people at Arizona State University Friday that the country needs a change of leadership.

“We don’t need somebody who knows how to work the system. We need somebody to change the system,” he said. “I’m not running to uphold conventional wisdom. I’m running to change the conventional wisdom.”

Obama spoke on a range of topics.

He called for withdrawing U.S. troops from the Iraq war, and said that if elected his first course of business will be to call for a meeting of the joint chiefs of staff to order them to remove Americans from the Middle East. He also promised to provide health care to every single person in the United States that is as good as health care U.S. senators receive.

He pledged to close what he termed the “achievement gap” in education by recruiting an entire army of new teachers. He also vowed to make college more affordable, which prompted rousing applause from the largely college crowd.

Obama said he would mandate increased fuel efficiency in cars in order to decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

On immigration, he advocated securing the U.S. borders and providing a pathway to citizenship for foreign nationals already living and working in the United States.

Looks like he's polishing up his VP stump speech!

4. More like Hillary is caving because Obama has taken the winning side...
on the war issue since 2002.

"Obama said he would mandate increased fuel efficiency in cars in order to decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil."

Obama specifically called for 40 mpg fuel efficiency standards - did Hillary ever support this position?

5. "on the war issue" And yet has voted with Clinton on every Iraq vote.

So, you're saying you think she's been as right on the war issue as Barack has since he's been a Senator. That's unusual honesty from an Obama supporter. Thanks!

And Envionmental Action called BS on Barack's bogus 'fuel efficiancy plan' months ago:

6. Really? He voted for the IWR?
Because I seem to remember him speaking out against it while Clinton and others supported it.

"So, you're saying you think she's been as right on the war issue as Barack has since he's been a Senator. That's unusual honesty from an Obama supporter. Thanks!"

I'm not an Obama supporter - he's merely the only candidate to come to campus so far. I'll see Hillary if she shows up, but she won't.

I'm still holding out for Gore until the end of the month - but dishonesty and knee-jerk idiocy from you Hillary supporters is creating a really solid case for me not to vote for her.

Oh yeah. That, and her record. And Mark Penn.

7. "as Barack has since he's been a Senator" - as I said.
Check the record. On every Iraq vote, Sens Clinton and Obama have voted exactly alike.
Sorry to rain facts all over your pep rally. But facts can be a buzzkill, for sure.

8. Too bad for you Clinton and Obama were on record in 2002-2003.
Of course, this whole "Only stuff from 2004 until now counts!" crap is a laughable attempt by you Clinton supporters to whitewash her lackluster, pro-IWR record and defy logic and common sense.

But logic and coherent thought can be a buzzkill, for sure.

9. Every Iraq War vote, exactly the same.
Like two peas in a pod. If he's so against the Iraq War, why hasn't he ever voted against it? Did he mention that at today's pep rally?

10. In the Senate, yes. Too bad people have lives before the Senate.
And too bad Hillary has a 2002-2003 record of supporting the war that you can't whitewash.

I guess if you think voting for funding equals voting for war, then maybe you'd mistake Obama's votes as "pro-war". But most of us with a shred of intelligence laughed off this idiocy back in 2004 when it was used as a smear against Kerry.

2. I was there, I shook his hand and thanked him...
He gave a good speech - even threw in a joke about Cheney being his cousin and the "black sheep" of the family.

More candidates should take a hint and visit college campuses.

15. very cool!
Hope a lot of student showed up at ASU, Home of the 7-0 Sun Devils.

(I had to cheat the poll on the state press site on Tuesday regarding "are you happy Obama is visiting) ASU is such a right wing haven that is JC himself returned as a Democratic Candidate the Young Republicans would be out picketing.
