Why Dems should root for the Red Sox in the World Series

The Rockies Pitch Religion
Dave Zirin

In Colorado, there stands a holy shrine called Coors Field. On this site, named for the holiest of beers, a team plays that has been chosen by Jesus Christ himself to play .500 baseball in the National League West. And if you don't believe me, just ask the manager, the general manager and the team's owner.

In a remarkable article from Wednesday's USA Today, the Colorado Rockies went public with the news that the organization has been explicitly looking for players with "character." And according to the Tribe of Coors, "character" means accepting Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior. "We're nervous, to be honest with you," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "It's the first time we ever talked about these issues publicly. The last thing we want to do is offend anyone because of our beliefs." When people are nervous that they will offend you with their beliefs, it's usually because their beliefs are offensive.

As Rockies chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort said, "We had to go to hell and back to know where the Holy Grail is. We went through a tough time and took a lot of arrows."

Club president Keli McGregor chimed in, "Who knows where we go from here? The ability to handle success will be a big part of the story, too. There will be distractions. There will be things that can change people. But we truly do have something going on here. And using us in a powerful way."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The article is a bit dated, but the point holds true. They love them some Jesus, and probably tax cuts too.

Boston's just as bad as New York when it comes to payroll and snapping up all available free agents and trade pieces.

(While my White Sox have a large payroll as well, the difference is clearly that we are very bad at doing that, but rather seem to have cornered the market on paying through the nose for old, declining, and downright-bad players)

the Yankees beat the Red Sox by about $60 million and are in the same division (i.e. the Red Sox have to beat them to be successful). When was the last time the Orioles, Blue Jays, and Devil Rays went anywhere?

Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 11:10 AM by Rhythm and Blue
Red Sox outspent the Orioles (perhaps the worst front office in baseball, poor guys) by $50MM, and the Jays by $60MM. They outspent the Devil Rays by $120MM--yes, the difference between the Red Sox and the Devil Rays is more than the entire payroll of any team but the Yankees or the Red Sox.

They're the exact same thing.

11. Red Sox gotta compete with the Yankees
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 11:15 AM by darboy
I'm all for a salary cap, but I don't blame the Sox for trying to be competitive stuck in a division with the Bronx Billionaires.

The Yankees salary is $213 mil.: Take ESPN's number of $195 mil and add $18 mil for Roger Clemens. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=nyy

Red Sox salary is $143 mil.: That is actually $70 mil of difference (so I lowballed it).

And I'd do the same thing if I were Cashman.

But at the same time, their payroll is triple the Rockies'. Rooting for the Red Sox in this is like going to a casino and rooting for the house, just because the player is a Christian.

Neither does Jerry Falwell. Seems that at worst, they pick up whoever they can and then pressure them to conform to Christian morality while on the team. Sort of offensive, I guess, but not Coulter territory.

I wouldn't put the Rockies in the same class as Coulter or Falwell. I'd say it's more like the player being a smug church lady who runs a little shop down the corner and insists her employees not swear in front of her. (this analogy is quickly falling apart)

"Now, Feisty, I say that Erstad, he's a real ball-player. He's always playin' it the way it's played. Reminds me of Yaz, back in the day. There was a man who you just looked at and knew, 'that man's a ball-player. He plays the game right.' And Ersty's the same way. Sure, he might not put up the big numbers, but he's not in it for his own numbers. He's in it to win, and he does all the things that don't show up in the box score. So some people wake up and read the paper and see he went 0-4, and think he had a bad night. But I saw him taking pitches, going the other way with it, giving the runner a chance to score, doing the things right, like a real ball-player does. It's like Yaz told me..."

*Erstad strikes out in three pitches.*
*Minute and a half of silence.*

"Now, DJ, that Podsednik. You can look at this team a dozen ways, and no matter how you look, Pods is right there at the top. Without his speed, making things happen, who knows where this team would be. And you can look at the standings, and you gotta wonder where we'll be once we hit our stride. Because there's so much talent on this team, and they just haven't gotten any breaks yet, and Pods is a good example of that. Every at-bat he's grinding it out, and they're always good at-bats, and he can make something happen on just about any ball in play. I remember watching Yaz up at bat, and...*

*Pods takes a strike, then pops up to shallow right.*
*Fifteen seconds of silence*

"Lemme tell you, DJ, that Gagne, he's a hell of a pitcher. He could close for any other team. And you look at his ERA, and maybe that doesn't look as good, but when you watch him, he's just dominant every single time. Coming up to bat now is..."

39. Here's more to feel better about the Red Sox
"Boston Red Sox Chairman Thomas C. Werner is so far the most generous Democrat among team owners. The famed television producer has donated $2,500 to Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, $2,300 to former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and $2,300 to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Werner's partner, Red Sox Principal Owner John W. Henry, has also given generously to Democrats in the past, but has yet to back a candidate in 2008.

Few New Yorkers would be surprised to learn that Giuliani, an avid Yankees fan, has gotten $2,300 from club owner George Steinbrenner."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/08/10/gop-outraising-dems-among_n_59987.html

Steinbrenner also gave illegal campaign contributions to Nixon and got pardoned by Reagan.

I already said in a previous post that, due to darboy's article on the Rockies, I wouldn't feel as bad if Boston wins. Jeez.

Having said that, there is nothing anyone could ever do or say to cause me to root for the Red Sox (I'm a Yankees fan :)) or especially any team with asswipe loud-mouthed BUSH KISS-ASS, Curt Shilling, on it.

Are you not aware of the lovey dovey promotion Schilling gave to his idol Bush in SHILLing's efforts to see Bush win the election over John Kerry....John Kerry of MASSACHUSETS AND HOME OF THE RED SOX??? How dare that asshole Schilling openly speak out on Bush's behalf during that crucial time. Schilling put the screws to Kerry as much or more than any other neocon in the country, considering his immensely high public profile and possible influence over sports fans across the country.

48. Well, the YANKEES have that batshit crazy owner, who has tossed
money at every GOP presidential nominee for the last fifty years. AND who bought World Series rings, ILLEGALLY, for Rudy Giuliani!

Really--if you're going to criticize the Sox, who have one 'imported' (he doesn't even live here) GOP asshole that we hired to do a job, you need to look at your own team and apply the same standard. They may as well call them the GOPYANKEES...

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0407/3647.html
But to some fans in New York, the Yankees and Mets represent different ends of the political spectrum, with the clean-cut, corporate Yankees suggesting all things Republican and the somewhat disheveled and individualistic Mets exuding a more Democratic appeal.

According to a study last July by Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, Republican fans prefer the Yankees over the Mets by a greater proportion than do Democrats. When asked who they would want to win a subway World Series, 62 percent of Republican respondents chose the Yankees, while only 29 percent chose the Mets.

The numbers were more evenly divided among Democrats: 44 percent would choose the Yankees in a subway series, and 41 percent said they would want the Mets to win. (Fifteen percent didn't know or wouldn't say; Red Sox fans, perhaps?)

Nonetheless, Matt Cerrone, founder of the lively Metsblog.com, believes that the Mets have an undeniable Democratic mien. "The Mets tend to have more blue-collar sensibilities, and Democrats tend to be more the working-class party," Cerrone said. "Mets are more fun-loving, lighthearted, … more like liberal progressive thinking."

And then there's Rudy's rings:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/us/politics/10rings.html
http://politicalwire.com/archives/2007/05/10/did_yankees_cut_giuliani_deal_on_rings.html

Notorious Presidential pardon: http://www.time.com/time/2007/presidential_pardons/7.html

GEORGE STEINBRENNER, 1989
Indicted on 14 criminal counts on April 5, 1974, the owner of the New York Yankees plead guilty to obstruction of justice and conspiring to make illegal contributions to President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign. Steinbrenner, a major Republican donor, allegedly knew the money he was donating was not going through regular election procedures. Not wanting to appear soft on crime, President Ronald Reagan would only pardon Steinbrenner if the Yankees' owner admitted to the crime.

With Shilling, you really have to "consider the source." The guy is no political genius--he's so thick he can't see much daylight between John McCain and Barack Obama:

He campaigned for President Bush in 2004, and earlier this year, he said he was backing Sen. John McCain of Arizona for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. However, he added that if Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois were the Democratic candidate he would have a hard time choosing between the two men.

http://www.muckety.com/politics/101307-Out-of-the-park-and-into-politics.html

They're hardly identical twins....!!!!!

That said, I really don't care who people root for...but only SOX fans can hang out at our house while the Series is underway!

31. It might delay, but it wouldn't cancel. They've got a "system" to keep the field ready
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071021&content_id=2274532&vkey=ps2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

However, the weather can change quickly in Denver, which it did Sunday. By 1 p.m. MT, the sun came out and the winter weather was on its way out. By 2 p.m., the snow had almost completely melted off the field thanks to the sunshine and a field warming system under Coors Field that warms the field to 60 degrees.

"The plan was to plow snow this afternoon, but Mother Nature helped us," Coors Field head groundskeeper Mark Razum said.

The field warming system is usually used in February to help warm the soil and get the grass green, but the Rockies' grounds crew fired up the system this week.

Razum said Sunday that if a game had been scheduled for Sunday night, the grounds crew could have had the field prepared by a 6 or 6:30 p.m. MT game time. The grounds crew also uses growth blankets overnight to keep the grass and turf from freezing.

50. And he isn't too bright, poor guy. He can hardly tell the difference between Obama and McCain!!!
I shit you not--Schilling has a hard time distinguishing--it's gonna be a tough choice for him if the matchup ends up with those two running in the general!!! Like they're "sooooo close" politically!!!!!!

Hell, he can pitch--so that's what he needs to do. Of course, we won't be like that Laura Ingraham, and tell him to shut up and do it...

http://www.muckety.com/politics/101307-Out-of-the-park-and-into-politics.html

He campaigned for President Bush in 2004, and earlier this year, he said he was backing Sen. John McCain of Arizona for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. However, he added that if Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois were the Democratic candidate he would have a hard time choosing between the two men.

53. Yep, he has stuck his foot in his big mouth numerous times
Many players were angry with him for testifying and constant yapping about roids

He's not my favorite and he probably won't be pitching for us much longer

but he is part of a team I love. I take the good with the not so good,

and this has been a fabulous year for them. They were in first place for 95% of the season

I am happy for them and hope they go all the way.:woohoo: :applause: :woohoo:

Oh yeah...Listening to whiny Yankee fans is icing on the cake:evilgrin:

You don't have to ask me twice to cheer on the Red Sox

I've been a fan all my life. The Sox have had a great year and given me enormous joy

They are a diverse, passionate and fun bunch. The series against the Indians

was excellent. Every baseball fan should experience Fenway at least once in their life

GO RED SOX :woohoo: :applause: :woohoo:

IT'S BASEBALL.

It's not Gay marriage, universal healthcare, poverty, homelessness, social security, childhood hunger, euality, or seperation of Church & State. IT'S BASEBALL.

Root for a team. Don't root for a team. Think Curt Schilling is an a**hole (I do)... whatever. But, save your outrage and indignation for things that really matter. Okay?

Just a thought, and a wish.

You know, the town that went for Kerry by 70%, and a Green (No Repub) ran against Diane DeGette in '06.

Many people like their home team, regardless of the nuttiness of the owner.

Hope you aren't so paranoid when you have to come to our fundy cesspool for the 2008 Dem Convention. Watch us turn blue.

68. Oh good, turn this into a secular campaign against the Rockies
In case you don't know, Timlin, Wakefield, of course Schilling and many others on the Red Sox (formerly Trot Nixon as well I believe) are also big time fundies and conservatives. It's pretty obvious that professional sports attracts a lot of people of that stripe or turns them into such once they reach the top. Why? Gee... they're awash in money and many of them come from rural backgrounds where religion is very important in day to day life, or else they come from Latin America where the Catholic Church is very powerful. Take a look at all the players who point to the sky when they hit a home run or something.

This takes place all over major league sports, not just baseball. If you're going to tar just one team over this that's ridiculous.

Oh here you go... just google "Boston Red Sox + Christianity":

''Without question, chapel attendance among the Red Sox has been far and away more than any of the major league teams over the last two years," said Vince Nauss, president of Baseball Chapel.

Trot Nixon, Mike Timlin, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, Curt Schilling, Doug Mirabelli, Bill Mueller, Matt Clement, John Olerud, Mike Myers, Tony Graffanino, Chad Bradford: Each Sox player considers himself an evangelical Christian who believes in the sacred authority of the Bible and the promise of Jesus Christ as his savior.

''In terms of coming to Bible study and chapel, this team has more guys involved than any team I've ever been with," said Olerud, who has played for five teams over 17 seasons in the majors.

The evangelical Sox believe in sharing the ''good news" of their faith, as they demonstrated after their remarkable comeback last October when they climbed out of a three-game chasm against the Yankees in the American League Championship Series and swept the Cardinals in the World Series.

''I wanted to be able to glorify God's name when all was said and done," Schilling proclaimed after he won Game 2 of the World Series while bleeding through his sock because of an experimental medical procedure that enabled him to pitch with a dislocated ankle tendon."

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2005/08/31/faith_binds_many_on_sox/

Several of the people on that list are still with the Red Sox. So let he whose team is without fundies cast the first baseball.

81. Red Sox are fundies!?
"Seminal moment #4: Involves the Red Sox. Twice. August 8, 2005. The Boston Red Sox host the Texas Rangers at Fenway. After shellacking them for eight innings, the Red Sox own an 11-6 lead. Manager Terry Francona makes defensive adjustments at the top of the ninth inning. Outfielder Gabe Kapler moves from left field to right field, making room for Adam Stern to enter the game at left. Kevin Youkilis, dubbed the “Greek God of Walks” in the widely read Moneyball book<10>, enters the game at third base.

With that little bit of player shuffling, the Boston Red Sox fielded three Jewish players in a single game. That hasn’t happened before. Much. I should make a few caveats."

(Freakin' hilarious Dennis Leary - Mel Gibson - Red Sox anecdote follows - check it out!)

http://www.ajlmagazine.com/coverstory.html

Yup, Theo Epstein has put together a fundie team.

Riiight...

82. Youk's the only one left
Kapler's in semi-retirement and Stern has been MIA since 2005 (you can bet I've been following this because I was cheering hard for the Jew Crew). Varitek, Wakefield, Timlin and Schilling are all still with the team. None of it matters to me one bit. I'm not rooting for or against anybody in this series because I like both teams and the whole religion angle has no bearing on sports. But nevertheless, you can't say that one team is more "Christian right" than the other.

And 7 of those 12 players are gone now anyway.
