Obama Supporters: If McClurkin were on stage with Hillary, you'd be bashing her.
First off, Obama is my second choice candidate. So I obviously don't hate him, actually I admire him and thoroughly enjoy and like him. I'm also pulling for a strong Edwards/Obama ticket in the general election. BUT, this big outrage on DU deserves me bringing up this point. By sharing the stage with a bigot, Obama is sending a message to the GLBT community that when it comes to leadership on the issue, will he lead? I have my own issues with my own candidates views and opinions, like I did with my candidate in 2004 John Kerry's, but I think it's insane to let this bigot singer be involved with ANY Democratic event. Especially not an Obama event.

And if this was Hillary's tour, and she had the singer on stage, I am confident whether you admit it or not, you'd be bashing her just as strongly as some on DU are bashing your candidate. Some criticism is deserved, this is one of those times. Obama should do the right thing and remove this guy from the event, and send the message to gay and lesbian voters he's on their side in 2008.

15. Sure, I don't know if you will pay attention though...
This post below is an obvious example of indifference, indeed of callous disregard for the feelings of GBLT people and their allies, literally making fun of their problems with McCloset:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3634875&mesg_id=3634875

This next link is the start of a subthread between me and someone else who started with a generalization, I actually had to DEFEND Christian churches who weren't Homophobic, apparently, to him, all "true" Christian Churches are homophobic by default, and this is a Christian! Read the whole thing to get the proper context.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3628257&mesg_id=3629007

Then here is a deleted message, not much info itself, but look at the responses to it, and you can guess as to why it was deleted, gay slur:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3628257&mesg_id=3629769

And here's another message that compares Homosexuality to Alcoholism of all things! Think about how offensive is that.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=3634480&mesg_id=3634948

I could go on, but there are other deleted messages all over this board, you cannot say that indifference, if not outright homophobia, seems to be displayed far too often from McCloset defenders, and many Obama supporters.

13. And Hillary's group of religious senators do?
Kucinich supporters can be pretty damned ugly too, I learned that in 2003 when I got them confused with Dean supporters.

18. I don't give a shit about Hillary, I'm commenting on the behavior of many Obama supporters...
who behave like Homophobic assholes with not a bone of human decency or empathy in their entire bodies.

19. because of a singer?
Who has absolutely no influence over national civil rights policy at all? Yeah, that's important, but Hillary and her homophobic senators who actually write the laws, they don't matter to you.

BULL. SHIT.

22. That "singer" practically advocates torture of teenagers in his own damned church...
Don't obscure or confuse issues here, Hillary and those Senators are full of shit too, but that's not the subject of THIS thread, is it?

6. Agreed
I do like obama but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

He should get heat for this. I dont think it rises to the level of "thats the last straw Obama is a gay basher" threads we are seeing though.

10. Ah, why would I expect you to be mature?
You never have been. But anyways in response, I bring up a great point. And the fact that you get pissed off and "flip" me off only suggests that some supporters, not just Obama ones, on DU aren't mature enough or capable of having mature and meaningful debate about the future of our country.

This thread goes beyond the bigot singer controversy, and the hypocrisy of some supporters who will do ANYTHING to bash one another, but in reality if the same situation happened to an opponent they'd be raising holy hell.

9. Nice of you to lump us all together...No, I wouldn't be bashing her.

First of all, I know how popular Donnie McClurkin is among black evangelicals. My aunts and some of my friends listen to his CDs.

They could care less about his past or his views on homosexuality. They just want to hear the man sing.

Second, McClurkin has performed for the Clintons in the past.

Third, if Hillary had a gospel tour and McClurkin was one of the singers, I would think she's trying to get the black vote in South Carolina.

11. And Edwards supporters bash Obama
because they somehow think Edwards would be winning if Obama were out of the way.

Hillary has been attending prayer meetings with bigoted Senators for years and funny how her supporters don't give a crap about that.

14. I never said Edwards or Hillary supporters were in the right.
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 11:06 AM by Kerry2008
I'm personally discontent with the way candidate supporters conduct themselves here. It's very sad to see the future of our nation be "debated" about by people who will literally say and do anything to move their candidate up and bash and crush the other candidates down.

Obama was wrong in the situation, and I can understand the mild outrage. But I don't get the Obama supporters pretending this isn't a big deal, when they know if Hillary was the one involved in this situation, they'd be jumping up and down for another chance to bash her. I'm not saying all of them, just the majority. And that's not just Obama supporters, it's Hillary supporters, Kucinich supporters, Edwards supporters, etc.

20. And Edwards supporters bash Obama
And don't care one whit about the issue and just use it to bash Obama.

If they did, they'd CARE ABOUT HILLARY AND HER FUNDY SENATE GROUP.

People are so fucking hypocritical, all the way around. That is what the last 4 years has taught me.

16. If McClurkin were on stage with Hillary, it would have been an orchestrated Sista Soulja moment, but
with Obama, it was an oversight.

Obama should fix this problem and apologize while people are willing to believe it was an innocent if stupid error.

21. No- I wouldn't care. At all. Who cares about
a fundie singer on a gospel event? That's like complaining because Pat Robertson decides to pray for one of our candidates in an Evangelical-themed event.
