Hillary says She MAY give up SOME of the excutive powers by Bush
Hillary Clinton would launch a policy review as president with an eye towards giving up some of the executive powers accumulated by George Bush, she tells Guardian America in an interview today.

The New York senator and frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination also accuses the Bush administration's broad brush approach to terrorism of making it harder to understand "what it is we were up against", and expresses concerns about the attitude of the president's nominee for attorney general to interrogation and "expansive" executive power.

1. Best move would be to keep them and
not use them.

15. you realize of course, that the majority are clearly unconstitutional..
Are you advocating that unconstitutional authorities be kept around so the next 'divtator' won't have to grub around and steal them back? It is this kind of ignorance of our government, how it works and why it works that has allowed us to get into this position. Please spend some time studying the rudiments of your own government. Realize that you are in a large crowd on this.

16. Not so -- because that would set a horrible precedent. If a Dem President
agrees with the Rethugs that illegal actions are LEGAL, we're doomed.

21. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely - even with our beloved Democratic Leaders.
It's Congress who must enact laws to CLAIM back the balance of power from The Unitary Executive.

Anyone who is GIVEN POWER will be hard pressed to relinquish it.

Even with a beloved Democratic President, our democratic republic functions best when the Three Branches of our government SHARES power.

26. I'm a pack-rat type. I keep things that I never use....
but continue to keep it just in case I need it in a pinch....which has happened and I was grateful. Ya just never know. Look at it another way.....you can be a multi-millionaire but not spend but 1/3rd of it your entire life....We really don't need that big bank account but ya never know.....

Essentially, it's what one does with it. No need to over react.

8. Google American Freedom Campaign then
That group had a pledge about this subject and candidates gave various replies, shades of gray between complete agreement with the pledge and qualified support for its principles. Clinton's in the latter camp, but anyway, you can read the details for yourself that way if you're curious enough to poke further.

6. Most Constitutional Scholars would suggest that this is The Role of Congress?!?
Once Power is acquired, it's difficult to give up ... very difficult even for honorable people.

Power corrupts but absolute power corrupts absolutely! Congress needs to do their damn job! :grr:

7. Hopefully at the very end of her Presidency
Republicans demand everyone but themselves follow the rules. I'd like to see Hillary keep all the powers Bush and Cheney have ceded to themselves, then formally, legally and legislatively give them up, and reinstate the Special Prosecutor law as well, at the end of her second term.

In the meantime, I'd like to see Roberto Gonzales, John Woo and a few others extraordinarily renditioned to Syria as active anti-American terrorists.

If she wins, she may need those same powers to clean up the mess that sorry cabal will leave behind, probably on purpose!

10. The best action is for Congress to abolish executive orders and signing statements that make law.
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 07:31 PM by jody
That would be one small step for We the People and rein in rouge presidents who violates his/her oath of office to defend our Constitution.

11. what a silly OP
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 07:34 PM by MonkeyFunk
When asked about giving up some of the newly-taken powers, she said "Oh, absolutely!"

She didn't say she MAY. She said "Oh, absolutely".

She answered the question exactly as everybody here would've liked ANY candidate to answer it. And you turn it into an attack? How lame.

17. "Obama fails to promise that he'd give up any of the executive powers
claimed by Bush."

That would be a true headline, though misleading. Your statement about HRC is equally misleading.

19. You're splitting hairs with the intent
of painting Hillary to be dishonest by assuming that she'll continue Bush's policies and that she has no intention of keeping her word.

I prefer to take Hillary at her word if she wins the nomination. The same goes for any of our Democratic candidates.

If Giuliani wins I doubt he'd give up any executive power and he'd probably add more of his own if he could get away with it.

Those powers must be wrest away by a Congress with a f**king spine. :(
