Dean: GOP Wants To "Neuter" California

The chairman of the Democratic National Committee came out swinging today against Monday's news of a new campaign to qualify the initiative changing how California's electoral votes are awarded. And just like the first time the initiative surfaced, he blamed it squarely on Republicans in general, and GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani in particular.

The initiative, said Dean, is "an opportunity for the Republicans to neuter California, to take away California's role as the most powerful state in the country when it comes to selecting the president."

Dean and state Democratic party chairman Art Torres held a noontime conference call with reporters to bash the initiative that would allow 53 of the Golden State's 55 electoral votes to be awarded based on the winning candidate in each congressional district.

..."Democrats also demanded to know who's putting up the money for signature gathers to circulate the petitions, a bank account that backers estimated would reach $3 billion in order to get the initiative on the June ballot. They appear to have as little as three weeks to do that.

5. Deborah Bowen will refuse to certify the signatures
There is no way that they are being on the up and up with the signature gathering.

If they even get the signatures, she will resuse to certify it, and the matter will be tied up in court well beyond the election.

7. Is that what we've come to?
That we have to rely on an elected official lying? I mean, you seem to imply that she won't certify the signatures regardless of their validity. There are times when this board really depresses me - not just the scandals on the GOP side, but seeing what our own side is like. (And I'm willing to apologize in advance if I misread your implication, and hope you're not in the majority if I read it correctly.)

I think one reason so much of the public is fed up with politics is precisely this attitude. I think a lot of us realize that many political activists actually don't agree with democracy in general. I like, and trust, the American public, even when they make decisions I don't agree with. Yes, we've elected President Bush, twice, and I don't understand it, but that's the way we work.

I don't know, maybe I'm ranting. I'll be willing to bet that, if this post gets responses, they'll start by claiming Bush was never elected. I just don't like seeing people push for us to ignore laws, and despite conspiracy claims, I don't think most Republicans want it either...

Rant over, I guess, pointless though it may be.

R. Garrett

8. Dean frames this power grab perfectly
It takes away our big state power. A poll, done when the publicans first announced this scam, showed 49% FAVORED this! I guess the rumor of some publican fat wallet throwing cash at this scheme is true.

9. It's Unconstitutional

Article ll Section 1

"Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors..."

Only the legislature can determine how Electors are selected... It would be tied up in the Court for years...
