He criticized immigration raids on employers and said the country needs strong border security, but also a plan to allow illegal immigrants already here to become citizens.

He got a strong positive reaction when he said Congress must have the courage to stop President Bush from attacking Iran before bringing the troops home from Iraq.

Recently, senators, including the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, voted 76-22 to approve a resolution urging the Bush administration to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.

Some have said that like the resolution to authorize going to war in Iraq, the measure could embolden Bush to attack Iran. Obama was on the campaign trail at the time and did not vote on the resolution, but says he would have opposed it.

Obama, who fielded questions on the war in Iraq, education, immigration and gang prevention, acknowledged that he lacks Clinton’s name recognition.

“In California, they hear my name but they don’t know what I stand for,” Obama said. “Some people don”t know I opposed the war from the start. Our job is to get that track record out ... where people have heard me, we get their vote.”
