I was not what you call thrilled to receive a mailing from James "Duke" Aiona's gubernatorial campaign. Aiona, you see, is presently Hawai'i's lieutenant governor, serving under repuke Linda Lingle. (He is also as dumb as a bag of hammers, but I digress.)

What could be worse than getting a fundraising letter from a repuke? Realizing that our governor's races are off-year -- and thus "Duke" will be running in 2010. Ye gods!

Aside: The track record of politicians named "Duke" is awful. There's David, of kkkourse, and "Duke" Cunningham, or as he is also known, Inmate No. 2675438. This does not bode well for Mr. Aiona, although "Duke" Kahanamoku did serve as county sheriff here for years.

2. Well, she plays a moderate on TV

large chunks of mainland money (unprecedented here) went into her campaign, allowing her to run saturation ads (I literally had to turn off the TV at times!) aginst the same old, tax-and-spend Dems. :sarcasm: I have also long suspected that many part-year residents (= wealthy repukes) voted absentee.
