CBS NEWS POLL
For Release: October 25, 2007
6:30pm EDT
RACE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION: HILLARY CLINTON STILL IN FRONT
October 12-16, 2007

Hillary Clinton continues to be the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for President, and many voters say they’ll consider supporting her in November 2008 if she becomes the Democratic nominee.

Still, there are obstacles. Many voters think a Hillary Clinton presidency will divide the country rather than unite it. And when Al Gore is added to the list of Democratic candidates, he trails Clinton by only five points.

<SNIP>

AL GORE AND THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY
Although he has not declared his candidacy, this poll indicates that were he to enter the race, Al Gore could be a serious contender. Near the end of this questionnaire, his name was added to a short list of candidates vying for the nomination. He came in second among Democratic primary voters at 32% – just five points behind Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama trailed behind them in third place with 16% percent.

DEMOCRATIC CHOICE FOR THE NOMINATION
(Among Democratic primary voters)
Clinton 37%
Gore 32
Obama 16
Edwards 7

Gore took support from all the major candidates. In the first horserace question, which did not explicitly offer Gore as a choice, 2% of Democratic Primary voters volunteered Gore’s name. 46% of registered voters view Al Gore favorably, his highest rating since October, 2000.

3. IF this is going to happen...
...it needs to happen REAL soon.

I'm desperate for a Gore run. I think he's our best hope
for our country. I will work tirelessly for him, if he
runs. I support him, admire him and I'm waiting patiently.

However, I can't wait forever. It's go time.

I'm just as loyal to Gore as the next Gore fan--but I'm
beginning to consider the other candidates because it's
getting so late in the game.

I don't know how late he could jump in. However, one
would think that if he's going to do it--it surely has
to be done within the next few weeks.

5. How late is too late for Gore?
I asked that very question to the most determined Gore supporters, the answer - early November. There are a number of big state filing deadlines and if he misses those, he misses out.

Maybe 2 weeks of wishful thinking left...

Though I reluctantly let go of the Gore hope about a week ago. I figured if he was to declare a run, it would happen within a week of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. All I heard was crickets chirping.

My next Gore hope is that he will endorse someone other than Hillary - probably Edwards.

Really too bad, cause Al had the presidency secured, IMHO.

Of course, there is always 2016 - I think he will be 67 then.

12. I would say this Wednesday.
Technically (in sorts), this Wednesday would be the deadline to start a petition to be on the ballot in New York.

16. If he's not running....
...I think he needs to state unequivocally that he is not running.

He made definitive statements in 04. There was no "Draft Gore" movement
then, because he had clearly said he wasn't running.

His indefinite statements--which leave the door open--have fueled his supporters and
hope that he may run. He's left the door open for hope.

If he's not running, he needs to very publicly state--like he did in '04--
that he's not running.

The fact that he hasn't done this--while allowing movements for his candidacy
to flourish---gives me hope.

If there's no reason for that hope--he needs to tell us that so we can all move
on and face reality.

TwoSparkles you said:

Think about it, would you quit a day job you LOVED after winning the NPP for doing it?

I ultimately think all this speculation and second guessing and shoulds does not respect the man's chosen direction. A direction Al feels passionately about.

Al may still run for Pres, but not in 08. He owes us nothing and we should leave him alone.

Believe me, I'd love it if AL was our president in 2000 or in 2008!!!!! I hoped for a long time too; but it is time to hope for something realistic.

Maybe he will endorse Edwards and we can still have an alternative to Hillary?

peace~:)

18. I'm not asking for the moon!
You and I are on the same page, with regard to our respect and
love for Gore. I do also agree that endorsing Edwards would be
nice.

However, I don't think that wanting a definitive answer on this
is unreasonable.

I never said that Gore owes us anything! I'm not saying he should
"quit his day job".

I think that's great if he wants to continue speaking about global
warming. I support whatever he does.

I don't think it's so God-awful that I'm politely suggesting that Gore
speak to a reporter for two minutes and give an unequivocal "No, I'm not
running" statement, if in fact, he isn't running.

Undoubtedly, he must be flattered that so many people love him and are
begging for him to run. I'm sure he feels wonderful that so many
admire and respect him. I doubt that Gore feels that it's beyond reason
to definitively say no.

My guess is that we will hear one way or the other.

I don't know if that would be putting him on the ballot without asking him, not sure. But they are trying.

13. How is this a "push poll" question?
Suppose Al Gore decided to run for President. If the race for the Democratic party's nomination in 2008 comes down to a choice among Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Al Gore, and Barack Obama, who would you like to see nominated -- Clinton, Edwards, Gore, Obama, or someone else?

22. Yes, it is.
When question 84 asks the person for their opinion on Al Gore, and Question 85 very much highlights Al Gore's name, it practically a push poll, regardless if it is intentional or not.

20. 35% of Dems Want More Choices, Gore Unfavorable at All-Time Low
The desire for "more choices" - which I take to mean Al Gore, but feel free not to - jumped from 28% a year ago to 35% now.

Clinton
Favorable: 43
Unfavorable: 41

Gore
Favorable: 46
Unfavorable: 29

Gore has 24% undecided, whereas opinions of Clinton are much more entrenched with just 15%. She has little room for improvement, where Gore has room to run.
