Alvin McEwen: LGBT's of color have been kicked off the bus & told to find our own way home
...When Obama first included McClurkin in his campaign, he made him himself look like a hypocrite. Here is a man who onced addressed homophobia in the black church now inviting a purveyor of it to raise money for him via a series of black gospel concerts.

And when he is criticized for this decision, he seeks to soothe wounded feelings by inviting an openly gay white pastor to take part.

So on one side of Obama is Donnie McClurkin, who represents the black church. On the other side is Pastor Sidden, who represents the lgbt community.

That is the wrong symbol to put forth.

Inviting an openly gay black pastor would have been an excellent way to demonstrate the commonalities between the lgbt and African-American struggles for self-determination.

Obama's clumsy invitation to Pastor Sidden only perpetuates the myth that being black and being gay are two separate identities that don't overlap.

Furthermore, it means that folks like myself (lgbts of color) are once again shown how invisible we are.

No. More than that.

We have been given the hook, pushed to the side, had the trapdoor to the alligator pit released under our feet.

LGBTs of color haven't been just pushed to the back of the bus in this controversy. We have been kicked off of the bus and told to find our own way home....

2. This is a BullShit Post. You want to be active and March to get rights. Go March on Washington and
Get the Senators Attention. March until you get what you deserve. Sitting here on DU complaining is not getting the Job done. Do what MLK did. March until the issue is Address. You are trying to smear Obama because of what Donnie said this is Bullshit. If you are so outraged then DO SOMETHING ABOUT. Get people together and go down and March on Washington. Get someone to be able to address congress with your issues. That is the only way you are going to be heard.

And there is a very handy little "ignore" feature. Use it instead of "whinning" about the threads after you click on them and read them of your own volition.

3. It is a "double struggle" or even a "triple struggle" for GLBT of color.
Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 07:42 AM by Dhalgren
Some of us get it. And some of us will never rest, never shut up, never sit down till every American citizen has full and equal rights under the Constitution. No "same as" or "equal to" bullshit. Obama is continuing to disappoint. I wish I could say that the other "top" candidates were better, but if they are it is only by a small margin. Big K&R for you BB...

9. Shame on the people who are complaining and not doing a damn thing about it.
I want to see them March on Washington to get rights that they deserve. DU is not going to get you what you want. Why not march and get your voices heard?

11. You are mad then do something about it African Americans were made in the 60's they did something
about it. If you are mad as you said you are why aren't you marching on Washington? African Americans did it and they got what they wanted. Are you mad enough to fight for your rights?

17. We GLBT folks have Marched on Washington several times.
In 1987, in 1993 and in 2000.

A million people were at the Marches in 1993 and 2000.

Sadly, nothing much has happened as a result.

22. Did MLK and the Civil Rights movement give up? No they kept on doing it until
Edited on Fri Oct-26-07 08:17 AM by FlaxieB
they got what they wanted. You need to do the same. You need to push for members of the GBLT to run for offices. The more offices you get in Congress the more you can sway votes. Keep working at it. It will take time, but it will be worth it.

And he was gay. The driving force behind MLK's March on Washington.

31. Actually MLK almost gave up. he couldn't at one point get too many
People to go along with him, as they felt he was too hard core and alienating, and so he said, "I'll take it to the youth of America."

And he reached out to people in HS and in college.

And his persistance got others like Abernathy to come back on board.

But he did have his doubts and his time of despair.

20. Kicked off the bus?
That's putting it kinda lightly.

Maybe if the bus was going 80, and the door was via being thrown through the front windshield with enough force that you bounce once before being run the hell over by said bus.

29. This is the most important part:
I know Pastor Sidden. He is a good guy who probably jumped into the middle of this situation because he wants people to know that God loves them no matter what orienation they are.

The ironic thing is this entire controversy could have been avoided if Donnie McClurkin had practiced that same principle.
