Washington, D.C. (AHN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney expressed his agreement to a proposition to bomb Iran, if it became necessary to ensure that country didn't build of nuclear weaponry.
The statement was made following the announcement on Thursday of new sanctions against Iran by the Bush administration.
Romney, a former governor from Massachusetts, declared his agreement with a military strike on Iran to a Manchester, N.H. audience of doctors and nurses, reports USA Today.
"If for some reason they continue down their course of folly toward nuclear ambition, then I would take military action if that's available to us," Romney remarked.
He added that "bombardment of some kind" must be an option that should be made readily available.
This decision was firmly criticized by Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, who said that such a decision must be voted against by both Republicans and Democrats alike.
Edwards expressed disappointment and disapproval for support for the bombing proposition by other candidates as well. Saying that support for Bush administration policies was expected from Republicans, Edwards said that Democrats didn't need to help. He chastised Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) for helping a GOP march to war with Iran for supporting the new sanctions.
Edwards urged the Bush administration to take try more diplomacy to end Iran's nuclear ambitions.
