NYT: Obama speaks with NYT about Clinton, the campaign
Edited on Sat Oct-27-07 01:37 PM by Katzenkavalier
Q. Why would you be a better uniter than Senator Clinton?

A. “There is a legacy that is both an enormous advantage to her in a Democratic primary, but also a disadvantage to her in a general election. She, I think, represents a lot of old arguments.

“I recognize that she has reached out to Republicans in a very deliberate way in the Senate, but if you look at how she is perceived nationally, I think people perceive her as a tough, competent, intelligent person. But there’s no sense among independents or Republicans that she’s going to bring a new language to our politics.

“On the one hand, I think people know what they are going to get with Senator Clinton. On the other hand, if you believe that the country needs big change, if you believe that business as usual is not sufficient to solve health care or institute a major energy policy or help to heal racial divisions or religious divides in this country, then my candidacy looks more appealing.”

Q. Has she been truthful to voters about what she would do as president?

A. “No.

“I don’t think people know what her agenda exactly is. On Social Security, in the last debate, she was very explicit about not wanting to disclose how she would approach it. On Iraq and Iran, I think there has been a tendency to go back and forth in her positions. Now, it’s been very deft politically, but one of the things that I firmly believe is that we’ve got to be clear with the American people right now about the important choices that we’re going to need to make in order to get a mandate for change, not to try to obfuscate and avoid being a target in the general election and then find yourself governing without any support for any bold propositions.”

Q. Have you performed as well as you would have liked to in the debates? And going forward, do you have to do more to show that you can?

A. “I think there’s no doubt that in the first couple of debates, the format didn’t work for me. Or I didn’t adapt to the format.”

Q. Would it have made sense to begin sharpening your criticism earlier?

A. “I don’t think people were paying attention. I also think, as I said, No. 1, people needed to get to know me. No. 2, there are a bunch of other candidates in this race and my feeling always was early on that for me to presume from the start that somehow this is a two-way race.”

Q. Some of your supporters say they are waiting for you to be more aggressive.

A. “I am not interested in tearing into Hillary Clinton, just for the sake of tearing into her. As I said before, I think she is an admirable person, I think she’s a capable senator, I think there’s overlap between some of her ideas and mine. The case I’m making is not that she’s a terrible person or would be a terrible president, the case I’m making is that I would be better at those things that the country needs right now. I will more effectively bring the country together, I will more effectively overcome the special interests and I will more provide a clearer vision for the country about where we need to go.”

4. “I am not interested in tearing into Hillary Clinton," That's good to hear!
"I think people perceive her as a tough, competent, intelligent person."
"I think she is an admirable person, I think she’s a capable senator, I think there’s overlap between some of her ideas and mine."

Not bad. Sounds like he wants that VP spot after all!

7. Obama is too good of a man and a Democrat to want to seriously damage her
for the General election. He's been very respectful and careful thus far--a sign to me that he values his party and his country more than his own ambitions. As long as he sticks to the high road, he may lose, but he'll always have my respect.

16. Aspects of the party need damaging
If he isn't willing to do it because he values the party, then he isn't the agent of change we need.

6. Sounding like Republicans on national security
"I believe that trying to sound or vote like Republicans, when it comes to national security issues, is bad for the country and ultimately bad for Democrats, so I have a disagreement with her on that."

Can I have some more of this please. Clinton policies are bad for America and ultimately the policies of the 90's laid the groundwork for where we are today.

10. Your sig is ironic
Kinda reminds me of the "fair and balanced" slogan Fox is always trying to shove down our throats.

8. He Gonna Get Clobbered
He needs to talk more like MLK (or Malcom X) about change, and not like an Oxford intellectual!

"But there’s no sense among independents or Republicans that she’s going to bring a new language to our politics."

A new language to our poltics? What the $%&@ does that mean? I'm pretty well read, but I have no idea of what that means! If he thinks the average voter's going to understand this, then he's totally cooked.

11. Were MLK & Malcolm X Any Less Inteligent?
Or Ben Franklin, or Abe Lincoln, or FDR?

Obama needs to get concise and direct, or he will get clobbered. Heck, I'm rooting for the guy - I think he's smart and sincere.

20. I've heard Sen. Obama speak in public to hundreds of people
I found him to be magnetic and extremely easy to understand.
I saw him speak at USC months ago and there was a real cross section of ages/races/economic levels present.

He spoke a universal language to hundreds in attendance. He spoke in a way that had the college students shouting his name and close to tears because of his words and his message.

No matter the age, the race or the $$'s ~ everyone there was screaming his name!

I have also been thrilled to hear MLK speak twice.

The feeling of the crowd for Obama was almost equal to the response for MLK.

The difference was that MLK had been a national figure and an idol, OBAMA is new on the scene.

I have always been a huge fan of the CLINTON duo!

I was privileged to see Hillary Clinton speak during the Kerry Campaign. She was speaking at a college in Orange County CA.

Sen. Clinton was marvelous, so confident, just great!

That audience was mixed as well.

She certainly earned the respect of everyone present, that she did.

She did not, IMO, have that magical quality, that certain something that makes the listener yearn to have her as your leader ~ one that gives HOPE, a brighter tomorrow, a vision to really change the world and make it better.

That I saw in Bill Clinton, JFK, RFK, MLK and I see now in Barack OBAMA.

I also saw JFK speak at Los Angeles City College, it was amazing ~ his message, his passion, his complete hold on his audience.

Seeing OBAMA in person reminded me of JFK and MLK ~ they could grab an audience and cause you to always remember that experience.

13. Uniter=============Good Lord Almighty
with the type of supporters he has no body...absolute no body would want to join him. They are so like the republicans, with swift boating, bashing and slurring. I for one could even get close to him, because of the type of bashers that support him.

You read over and over about every four or five threads ...Obama supporters bash Hillary bash Hillary bash Hillary.

WHERE IN THE S.O.B. HELL DO YOU SEE HILLARY OR EDWARDS SUPPORTERS BASHING OBAMA. NO DAMN PLACE. FOR SHAME AND YOU CALL YOUR SELVES DEMOCRAT.
