2. Why is this so surprising?

Its the nature of such forums. Its not anything specific to DU. Simply put if you say something everyone agrees with at best you will get a smattering of "Agreed"s. Say something that rubs people the wrong way and they will respond. And if you respond in kind (or others that agree with you) then its off to the races and the topic gets pegged to the ceiling. Meanwhile the post everyone likes and agrees with sinks to the bottom and falls off the front page.

being inclusive by nature, and thus needing to analyze so we can synthesize different things, Democrats have developed a tendency for self-criticism. Self-criticism is also, BTW, the pre-requisite for prophecy. That makes us healthier than the blasphemers who consider us their enemy, but it also has gone too far sometimes resulting in a self-censorship that kills a lot of good stuff before it ever gets a chance to manifest itself.
