Edwards to Clinton: American People Deserve rhe Truth - Not More Doubletalk - on Iran
John Edwards for President
Friday, October 26, 2007

----
Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Today, Senator John Edwards released the following statement criticizing Senator Clinton for her doubletalk on Iran: "When Senator Clinton voted to declare Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, she only aided and abetted George Bush and Dick Cheney's march to war.

"We now have clear confirmation that the administration is planning attacks on Iran. This morning, NBC reporter Andrea Mitchell reported that Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters on a flight back to the United States last night that there are 'contingency plans for an attack on Iran' and that 'the planning has been done.'

"Republican candidates are also beating the drums of war. In an interview yesterday, Rudy Giuliani also said the military stage is 'closer than some of the Democrats believe.'

"Even though she's cozying up to the Republican approach when she's inside the Beltway, when she's in Iowa, Senator Clinton tells a different story. But with a question so critical, the American people deserve the real truth, not more doubletalk. And they need members of Congress to stand strong and fight the president on his march to war with Iran - not quicken the pace."

1. Edwards joins Biden and Dodd in pointing out how Hillary enabled the upcoming war in Iran
This message needs to be pounded into the voters' consciousness.

15. There goes Johnny again "almost" calling Clinton a liar.
He should grow a spine, and actually say what he's using weasel words to insinuate.

3. Bush will bomb Iran before the elections. That's what AIPAC wants, that's what Israel wants,
that's what all the neocons and their PPI neolibs want.

Opening up a third front in the middle east isn't something they are prepared to do right now.

The approach Edwards is taking on this thing is fairly well beneath him. The non-binding proclamation was a setup by the gop to trap HRC into looking weak on "terror". It didn't work but now Edwards in his desparation is picking up where they left off.

9. For every Shinseki, there are several Petraeus clones willing to ass kiss

Really? Webb, Dodd, and Biden didn't want to embark on another "Road to War" enterprise, so they voted against it.

Hillary trusts Bush, so she voted for Kyl-Lieberman just as she voted for IWR.

Bush already has the authority to go after terrorist groups. Kyl-Lieberman told him that the Iranians were a terrorist government.

Revulsion comes to mind every time I hear someone say "keeping the powder dry."

5. we need to keep ALL options on the table
http://www.herzliyaconference.org/Eng/_Articles/Article.asp?ArticleID=1728&CategoryID=223

... ...Iran must know that the world won’t back down. The recent UN resolution ordering Iran to halt the enrichment of uranium was not enough. We need meaningful political and economic sanctions. We have muddled along for far too long. To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep ALL options on the table, Let me reiterate – ALL options must remain on the table. ... ...-- John Edwards January 2007

8. Biden calls Bush admin policy on Iran "dangerous" and "mindless"
He said a military strike would only set back Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program by 18 months or two years, and would backfire by weakening US allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, radicalizing the Muslim world, and uniting the Iranian government behind their leader.

"This is a mindless, mindless approach to dealing with proliferation," he said.

Biden voted last month against a Senate resolution that declared the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. It passed 76 to 22, but Clinton was the only presidential candidate to vote for it. Her vote became a major campaign issue that was rekindled Thursday when the Bush administration announced stricter economic sanctions against Iran.

Biden said the resolution handed the president a justification for attacking Iran, declaring "I have zero faith" in Bush's judgment. Based on about 15 to 17 hours spent with the president, Biden said, "he is a lot brighter than most people think, but he is absolutely driven by his instincts and not by his knowledge, the knowledge base of what the hell we're dealing with."

The "saving grace" in the Bush administration, Biden said, is Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who he believes has set a "red line" against military action unless the Iranian regime attacks US forces.

Biden and Chris Dodd had the maturity and integrity to vote against the horrible Kyl-Lieberman. Hillary voted for it.

11. dangerous and mindless is Bush's par for the course
I disagree with Biden's assessment of Gates, though. Gates is just a powerless patsy. He has no say in the Bush administration at all.
