a RW "wedge issue" tactic to co-opt votes in SC. He picked up a cluster bomb and it blew up in his hands.

Supposing his staff her the real bunglers on this, what does that say about his ability to choose a cabinet and advisors if he were elected?

6. Thanks for posting
And yes, Obama is not a homophobe. From some DUers here, you'd think he was the Devil.

You find out who is legitimate and who isn't...my ignore list now includes people who accuse Obama and his supporters of being "no friend of the LGBT community", bigots and homophobes. It's not worth responding to people with that much hate in their heart.

order to get their votes. Is having McClurkin at one of the campaign events acceptable?

Sometimes, you have to compromise to win. When do you have to stop compromising?

20. He didn't have to compromise at all,
it was supposed to be a gospel tour, so I doubt that this issue would have emerged at all if McClurkin hadn't been invited.

21. He chose to compromise by having this person on his tour.
The point is that he accepted to compromise and I think he is wrong. That does not make him homophobic, but certainly somebody ready to accept certain associations that he does not need to have.

25. I don't see it as compromising
I see it as accepting reality. Should he have a gospel tour and just pretend the homophobic view doesn't exist? That's what's wrong with the Democratic Party, not what's right with it. Too many people think they can just pretend that every awful view only exists with Republicans. Well it isn't true. There are bigots and racists and all sorts of ugliness in this party. You have to look it square in the eye before you can anything to change it. He could have handled the situation a lot better, but I don't think it was a compromise to have this guy on the agenda. I think it was a refusal to pretend these views don't exist or sweep them under the rug. I'd much rather deal with people who are square up honest with who they are, than with some of the phony assholes at DU who wrap themselves in "liberal" the way fundy assholes wrap themselves in the flag.

And he goes and talks about "reaching out" and "teaching." Sorry, Barack, what we saw there was a big reach out, but no teaching at all.

26. Doch, doch!!!
The "teaching" was the ill-use of Rev. Andy Sidden to allow the "faith community" its "white man's perversion" while relegating the black LGBT community to "invisible" status, a position with which they are quite familiar. BIG slap-in-the-face from a black candidate whose voting record is, in fact, quite good.

29. So where is Obama's message of hope in all this?
McCurkin's message is one of self-hatred.

What about still impressionable young people who were attending this event? Does Obama realize how harmful it is for them, if they are christians, to hear that god hates homosexuality---and this message from a preacher-celebrity?

Obama cannot see how a black kid growing up with self-hatred is just as destructive as a kid born gay growing up to hate his or her self. And he is supposed to be about hope?

32. setting ourselves up
I understand the intensity of the emotion about GLBT rights
and appreciate the fierceness of many of the posts
but
Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun Magazine once said something like this in a speech I heard him give

"When we demand that our leaders are perfect - we turn them into liars"
(this was during Clinton's years)
and I can't help but agree -
They will all disappoint us one time or another
hold them accountable but help them on their learning curve - don't destroy good people in the process
we've got the power to use for good - let's help each other do that.

33. It's not about perfection or imperfection
Most of us are mature enough to know our candidates aren't perfect.

This McCurkin/Gospel Tour debacle says much about Obama's ability to bring together a group of wise, competent people to work with and for him. He's failed. At best is looks like he had no control or oversight over his staff. "At best." Even "at best" it's a disaster. This shows me that his ability to choose staff and cabinet would be characterized by poor judgment.
