BIDEN WANTS FOCUS ON FOREIGN POLICY

Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 11:58 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Categories: 2008, Joe Biden

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Ahead of the NBC debate from Philadelphia, the Biden campaign sent out a memo showing what Biden at least would like the focus to be on. And no surprise, he wants the focus on Iraq/Iran.

He'll tout his Iraq amendment that passed in the Senate and will likely criticize Democrats for voting against troop funding, particularly since the presumed frontrunners have said they can’t guarantee troops out of Iraq by 2013. He may also go after Clinton for her Iran vote, as he highlights that he voted against the amendment deeming the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.

Here’s his statement:

“Tonight the American people will be looking for their next Commander-in-Chief. He or she will have to end the war in Iraq responsibly, because this President has no plan to end it. And, the next President will have to turn immediately to other hotspots, including Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to protect America’s interests.

"We all agree that the Iraq war must end. But while leaving is necessary, it is not enough. We also need a plan for what we leave behind so that we do not trade a dictator for chaos. The Biden-Brownback plan for a political settlement in Iraq received 75 votes in the Senate, including 26 Republicans. In the meantime, we have more than a hundred thousand American troops risking their lives every day. We owe them our support as well as our gratitude, and that includes making sure that so long as they are there, they have the equipment to keep them safe, including mine-resistant vehicles. Some of my colleagues did not vote for that funding. That was a mistake. Some of those who will stand on the stage with me tonight also said that there might be troops in Iraq until 2013, the end of their first term as President. I ask them, 'how can you vote not to fund our troops when you acknowledge that they will still be in harms way years from today?' The safety of our troops is more important than election year strategy.

"The next President will also need to understand that many of the challenges we face are connected – you can’t deal with one without having an impact on the others. For example, the next President will have to meet the challenge posed by Iran with smarts as well as strength and without further poisoning our relations with the rest of the Muslim world and, in particular, destabilizing Pakistan and Afghanistan. I voted against the Senate's amendment to designate Iran's entire Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization because I don't trust this administration not to twist this legislation into a justification for war -- just like it did with Iraq. Democrats need to unite around an approach that is both tough and smart, not back legislation that plays right into President Ahmadinejad’s hands by escalating tensions with Iran. That only serves to keep oil prices high -- with the proceeds going right into the government’s pockets -- distracting Iranians from the terrible failures of Ahmadinejad’s leadership and solidifying them against us, while doing nothing to prevent Iran from getting the bomb.”

1. Course he does. Hell, if I was Biden, I'd want the focus on foreign policy too.
He is, after all, pretty much the only candidate with a workable long-term plan for Iraq, apart from candidates who've glommed on to Biden's plan.

2. Isn't this what we should be hearing
from all the candidates? Isn't foreign policy THE MOST important issue for the people of America? I would assume it is, but I wonder when someone like Joe Biden, touted as one of the best foreign policy minds we have, isn't high in the polls. Somehow, it doesn't make any sense to me. Is it because we can still get up in the morning, go to McDonalds, grab a coffee and head to work without any real fear of losing our way of life? Or literally our lives? Maybe so...I don't know.

3. Most Americans to me seem not to care- they're too busy
Nobody WILL care until the 11th hour. That is how most are. Everything from politics, healthcare, problems w/ your kid, etc. Don't want to deal w/ it until you have to. Most Americans I find are too busy running around like total fools day after day in the daily rat race to even notice. Stuffing a cheeseburger in their mouth while driving to soccer.

We need to wake up and get real. And realize there's more to life then how much money you have, what you drive, and who's texting you. We've become a greedy nation that has the all-about- me syndrome and have passed it along to our own children. There are so many issues right now that need our attention including foreign policy. ESPECAILLY foreign policy- because if the wrong nation gets a hold of some dangerous virus, bomb, etc. and decides what the hell- we won't have a country left. And then we'll scratch our heads and wonder where we went wrong. Preventive maintence, people. In everything down the line- from foreign policy to healthcare to keeping an eye on your kids. We need to start to pay attention to things that really matter in life.

Joe Biden is paying attention.
