Clinton was right last night
On many occasions we tell someone that, while we disagree with their opinion we understand from where they are coming. Similar sentiments are even found on DU. Sometimes.

Thus, one can follow Clinton in her assertion that, while she many not follow the same path, she can understand why Spitzer wants to provide driver's licenses to illegals - only for the purpose of driving, not as an ID.

That both Jeb Bush and Gray Davis proposed similar ideas, and, perhaps, the governor of Texas secretly wishes the same thing just highlight the role that illegals are playing - right or wrong - in these states.

1. I think the beef for many
was not that she was "right" on the issue, it was that she said it was a good idea, but wouldn't say she supported it. She was trying to have it both ways on the issue. But that was just my take.

7. I am not a Clinton supporter but actually I think she was right and I
really do not understand what is wrong with saying "It is a good idea" because it might be a good idea and at least he has an idea which is more than you can say for Bush and others. Just a way to critize her.

Now, I really didn't see her trying to have it both ways but that was about all she could acknowledge on it for now until she has more time to know what exactly the details are.

The illegals are here now and there will be others. You hear the crap driving is a privilege not a right which really isn't what this is about. Spitzer is just trying to find a way for identification and knowing who these people are. Maybe not a foolproof idea but at least an idea.

2. I agree-and I think they should be licensed
They are driving anyway. We have contact information--and we know that they have had to pass a test to drive.

3. Her answer was clear - but intentionally misrepresented to attack her.
It's fun to note that the planned attacks didn't touch her at all, but she lowered her guard with her nuanced answer, and they swung hard - and missed.

9. No, I was agreeing with you
I was pointing out how the phoney "progressives" are suddenly against immigrants now that Hillary took the controversial position of not hating immigrants

5. Nuance does not fit well into presidential campaigns
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 07:09 PM by bluestateguy
I wish it did, but it doesn't and those are the cards we have to play.

She could have very well said that yes, she "understood" Spitzer's dilemma, but then said up or down, she's either for it or against it.

18. This is correct
Or the whole idea of having 30 sec. or even 60 sec to reply.

Candidates cannot take a topic and develop it. They have to generate sound bytes and, until this last debate, Clinton was a master of it and poor Obama was losing it for being thoughtful.

11. It was a Gotcha question
It was meant to misportray Clinton as someone who, as president, would force states to give DL's to immigrants. The truth is that she supports Gov Spitzer's attempt to deal with the problem in the face of bush*'s failure to deal with the problem

15. She said it makes sense
Usually when someone thinks something makes sense, it means they agree with it. She tried to straddle the issue and not give a personal policy view at all. Then she turned right around and said she didn't agree with the policy, and then turned back around and said she understood why Spitzer was doing it. What's her opinion? Should states give illegals licenses or not?
