Barack Obama's support from liberals down to just 25%
Hillary Clinton's opponents have accused her of sounding too hawkish on Iran, of refusing to commit to a firmer timetable for removing troops from Iraq and of generally moving to the center -- all criticisms designed to undermine her support among the Democratic Party's liberal base.

But a new Washington Post-ABC News poll of the 2008 race shows a surprising trend: Clinton's support among liberals is actually rising, not falling, as the nomination debate has intensified.

A review of Post-ABC polls throughout the year, assembled by analyst Jennifer Agiesta of our polling unit, shows that Clinton has expanded her overall lead in the Democratic race in large part because of growing support among self-identified liberals.

The new poll showed 54 percent of liberals said they supported Clinton for the Democratic nomination, the second consecutive poll in which she has won the backing of more than half of all liberals. That represents a significant jump in liberal support from earlier in the year, when she was backed by 40-43 percent of those who identified themselves as liberals.

The opposite has happened to Barack Obama. His support among liberals has actually declined over the course of the campaign. He began the year with the support of 33 percent of liberals, topped out at 36 percent in July and now has drifted down to 25 percent.

1. How do they tell who is "liberal" and who isn't? Some kind of blood test? NT

4. "self-identified liberals","of those who identified themselves as liberals" - like that.
They ask.

8. They ask people being polled how they identify themselves.
Me, I always put "moderate." On account of being pro-death penalty. But they don't give definitions. So nobody notices that I favor nationalizing health care and the energy industry. And water resources. And hanging CEOs.

6. Obama's standing among liberals might be better if he was actually standing with liberals
instead of "ex-gay" clowns that he gives a microphone and a 1/2 hour to spew homophobic filth at his fundraisers.

9. Ditto. It was obvious that his numbers would go down after that; no brainer.
Lots of liberals realized that the "notion" of Obama is not the same as the reality of Obama, unfortunately. I am sure if they poll just Hollywood, they will see that his support there is way down too.

11. I'm familiar with the McClurkin incident
but exactly what was the "homophobic filth" he spewed at said fundraiser? I thought he just sang his songs and spoke a bit about the controversy.

15. Liberals aren't as stupid as Obama thinks they are.
With more experience, perhaps he'll learn who votes in Democratic primaries.

16. The only polls that really matter are the ones coming out of Iowa re: likely caucus goers.
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 07:55 PM by ClarkUSA
The most recent one from the University of Iowa had Clinton at 29% and Obama at 27% --
which is a dead heat given the poll's margin of error.

I'm very interested in what the next one will show, considering Clinton showed a 34%
post-debate drop vis-à-vis Obama in the latest CNN national poll.
