THE RACE: The national presidential race for Democrats, Republicans
___
THE NUMBERS - DEMOCRATS
Hillary Rodham Clinton, 46 percent
Barack Obama, 26 percent
John Edwards, 14 percent
___
THE NUMBERS - REPUBLICANS
John McCain, 22 percent
Rudy Giuliani, 20 percent
Mike Huckabee, 17 percent
Mitt Romney, 12 percent
Fred Thompson, 9 percent
___
OF INTEREST:
Giuliani's national standing among Republicans has eroded since September, when his 33 percent backing gave him an 11 percentage point lead over his nearest rival. The former New York mayor has lost support across the GOP spectrum of conservatives, moderates and liberals. McCain's support has grown strongly among moderate and liberal Republicans, while Huckabee's increased strength is most noticeable among conservatives. On the Democratic side, Clinton's healthy lead is about where it was over the summer, despite polls showing close races in early voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Her strength remains women voters, while she and Obama about evenly split the black vote.
___
This Pew Research Center poll was conducted from Dec. 19-30, and included telephone interviews with 471 Republican and GOP-leaning voters and 556 Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters. The margin of sampling error for both groups was plus or minus 5 percentage points.
