The Iraq War was the biggest foreign policy blunder since Vietnam. It is responsible for the deaths of about 5,000 American soldiers, more than 650,000 Iraqi civilians and over $600 billion dollars of wasted spending. Of Course there will be more deaths and more money spent in the future. Just because the actual combat was a few years ago doesn't mean we should dismiss it as an issue of the past. Of the 8 democrats running 5 of them supported the war and 4 of them voted to authorize it even though they had access to the National Intelligence Estimate in which the INR bureau specifically said that there was not enough evidence to suggest that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear weapons program.
If the war had not been authorized in the first places withdrawal plans and exit strategies would be irrelevant, a non-issue. With the extra several hundred billion dollars we could have expanded healthcare, social security and education or devoted more resources to actually fighting terrorism, assuming the democrats in congress had shown a little backbone and the money hadn't all gone to taxcuts for the wealthy. I'm not dwelling on the past, but I believe where a candidate stood on the most important decision in the past decade is a good indicator of that candidate's judgment. I'm not trying to bash any candidate because I know they are all good progressives. But if we are in the midst of another foreign policy crisis do you want a president who can make the right decision the first time?
