We've had those kind of politicians all along. I don't want a candidate who swears fealty to the public and exchanges money in back rooms. I don't want a candidate who is too stubborn to listen to the opinions of others and won't change his or her own if the others are right. I don't want a candidate who smiles all the time. I don't want a candidate who talks too much. I don't want a candidate who talks out of both sides of their mouth. I don't want a candidate who doesn't have the sense to say they're wrong once in awhile. I don't want a member of the religious right in the white house--separation of church and state is too important to me. I don't want a candidate who pushes a negative campaign--I want one who is above the fray.
I want a candidate who has a proven record. I want a candidate who believes in themselves. I want a candidate with the maturity to admit that the other candidates have good points. I want a candidate who pushes forward, but isn't about to give in to special interests. I want a candidate who has love in their life--who isn't afraid to express that love. I want a candidate whose only agenda is to improve our country by their own optimism and dedication. I want a candidate who makes others shine as well. I want a candidate who knows the truth is far more important than blind ignorance and a false sense of security. I want a candidate who isn't perfect, and doesn't pretend to be. I want a candidate who instills us all with more than hope--I want a candidate who instills in us a sense of both humility toward those who are worse off than we are and a sense of pride at our own beginnings as a nation. I want a candidate who is not a saint, who is as human as everyone else, but has made an effort to better themselves.
But if I can't have all these things in a candidate, the one thing I want, above all else, is the honesty to admit that they can't give us the moon, but will try their damnedest to at least help us get started.
