Is Obama mania group think run amok?
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 10:32 PM by I was just saying...
...just asking?

Since I can't catch this fever, I'm merely asking those who are 'all caught up.'
Does Obama represent the second coming? If so, the second coming of what exactly?

e.g. What chance does alternative energy development have against all of the nuclear power money behind Obama?

P.S. It's also a bunch of "Independents" and cross-over voters feeling their muscle.

20. Enlighten me kind sir. Obama is 'recent history' built around
Edited on Sat Jan-05-08 12:04 PM by I was just saying...
a book, an early childhood spent overseas - to which Obama accepts as foreign policy experience,
a time as a state senator in Illinois which is undocumented because he supposedly didn't keep records,
a chairmanship of a subcommittee in the U.S. Senate - to which he has yet to chair and/or convene. Result, a highly touted, seriously un-vetted candidate for the United States.

Thankfully there's still time to get this right. The media may finally decide to report the
news instead of shape it, and the real primaries will start in states that actually reflect
America, not these cliche-driven, traditional early voters in Iowa and New Hampshire. The
only times these states ever make the headlines is every four years with IA and NH kicking
and screaming to come in first. We need a 'change' alright - our election process.

Sorry, he's snores-ville when it comes to speeches - at least to me. I'm waiting on
report of his subcommittee assignments of which he is chairman, to which he has yet to
convene his committee. Its the little things like that that keeps me grounded to the
king, I mean, to Mr. Obama. Carry on.

16. One person's bullshit is another's fertilizer. That goes equally for any Democratic candidate.
Anyone who doesn't recognize that doesn't have the basic respect for others that they demand for themselves and their own candidate.

You do Joe Biden a dis-service.

19. The progressive populist is recognized in Edwards,
hence the comparisons. Looking at the charts it can't be denied that he is farthest left of center of the top three candidates. He is fairly scrutinized by his supporters as he himself expects. He is not being sold as a uniting savior of all the good American people.

25. What **exactly** makes them wrong and you right?
By what superior knowledge do you claim the truth about "our" future? And why do you assume that that vision IS the one that I and those like me need and/or want??? Isn't that assumption the very hubris (a.k.a. blasphemy) that made the very mistakes that all of us suffer from now?

For every negative thing you can say against Edwards, a negative thing can be said against Obama. You may weigh O's negatives lighter than you weigh Edwards, and I vice versa, but without a more concrete and complete calculus, those weights are the same in that yours or mine are both conjecture. Inferences are not necessary truths. And as much as I think we got into the particular mess that we're in due to the hubris of Republicans, I'm not willing to surrender the future to a bunch of power-hungry so-called "Independents" and cross-over voters.

The whole notion of "the third thing" is quite attractive, but fraught with danger in the obfuscation of differences between things that ARE in fact different.

Obama needs to say something about:
Public campaign finance;
Paper ballots marked by hand and counted in public on a national voting holiday;
Fair political use of public resources such as broadcast mediums and the internet;
AND a Free Palestine . . . before I'm going to believe diddly-squat about "change" and "hope".

21. Oh fer fuck's sake....
Look, the guy's a good candidate, okay? Maybe he's a little short on specifics in his speeches, but he's got charisma, gravitas, and the ability to attract younger voters, moderates, and even some republicans. He's simply a very good candidate in a crowded field of also very good candidates this election season. It was hard making a choice between Kucinich, Edwards, and Obama for me, but I see that Obama's got some momentum from his win in Iowa, and therefore has a good shot of taking the White House back from the far right wing. It would make sense, then, to throw some extra support behind the guy. Is that "fever" (i.e sickness)?

I support Obama, as do many here, but to characterize our support for the man as messianic does a disservice to those committed Dems who are doing their part to get a likable Democrat elected to the highest office in the land. If that qualifies as some sort of religious insanity, as your OP implies, then so be it.

22. It's really curious, these accusations
Whenever a large enough group doesn't agree with poster A, poster A immediately resorts to accusations of "GROUP THINK." I understand how that's a nice little trope hat people use, but what scares me is that some people seem to actually believe it.

Sometimes, a lot of people will disagree with you. It doesn't mean that they're being irrational or acting as a mob, and the more you insist that it does, the less likely you are to peel some of them away or persuade them. We should have learned this in 2004, but apparently we did not.

One thing is certain. When somebody has fallen to yelling "group think" at another position, that person has lost the argumnt and can't figure out what to do about it. Accusations of group think are really the last cry of frustration from somebody who doesn't lknow what else to say. It's a loser argument.

33. Nothing Like HAving to Deal W/ Incisive Analysis Where Those Phrases End Up As THE Most Appropriate
Descriptors available in the collective vocabulary. :smoke: :nuke: Cause that is the issue. Obama is a distraction... Always has been , from the getgo. Put him up to give that speech at the 2004 convention, He has never had a clue.

Watch in the event the race were to come down to Hill and Obama, (That IS The Plan after all),you will begin to hear the drumbeat grow louder about "electability," code speak for America is not ready for a Black man to be President. The Southern Strategy is more subtle but remains effective to this day.

This IS the MAster plan. Obama is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pumped up right now he cannot even see straight, much less the forest ... for the trees.

Then , once this perspective becomes the overiding focus, the paid pundits, wage slaves themselves to the establishment, otherwise known as " The Corporation," will lead the sheep to the ONLY remaining choice... "Hill/Bill" More to come...

That is WHY... John Edwards MUST be "Done Away With" in due time. :argh:

:grr: It is all 'bout the MSM, as "The Voice of The Corporation," ignoring Edwards (to prevent/hamper his fund raising), pumping Obama (for a time), just long enough to weed out Edwards, the last remaining hurdle to anointing "The Corporatist Queen" who then will be lauded as a "Steeled Fighter" who has taken on the Best the Party can offer..... and won? :shrug:

"A fine field of Great Democrats," one of whom will go home to his "mansion" w/ his sick wife who will then get LOADS OF MEDIA ATTENTION and who will be set upon by "The Establishment," to give the go ahead to his supporters to join... "In Unity w/ The Winner,"

Anyone receive that sorry email from Howard?

UNITY = FASCISM!

AND DEMOCRATS OF NOTE WILL SAY...:puffpiece:

And then boy we sure have a great "Future" in Barack Obama, "He will one day be President, after he pays his dues, and look at the experience that he has had, he will live to fight again... and He knows how to play the game." Obama will be given a wink and a nod, promised a cabinet post "WHEN Hillary wins." "America needs the experience that Hillary provides, the inside track so to speak."

"The Democrats have Decided" will be the story. :headbang:

:think: Not... "WE" Democrats... WILL NOT HAVE!!! "The CORPORATION through ...The "Voice of Corporate America," Will Have Made OUR Decision FOR "US"..........

Then once decided, albeit PREMATURELY, the "steeled candidate" will embark upon the general election, confidence renewed and the Establishment WILL have dodged The Peoples' SILVER BULLET that "was" John Edwards candidacy.

The Establishment WILL have its necessary "insurance" against any more than token change, mere sugary syrup to again mislead the masses... in the unlikely event that Hillary somehow were able to thread what will be a verrryyyy fine needle notwithstanding the continued peril of election fraud etc., and "win." Hillary, BOUGHT AND PAID FOR, TOTALLY beholden, a fall back "backup" for "The Corporation,"... if,,,,, just by some quirk of circumstance a democrat were to win.

No problem here... The bases are covered... for "The Corporation." :)

:nuke: Now once decided... that Hillary IS The Democratic Nominee, the proverbial closet doors which the Republican Political War Machine has been struggling to keep closed, till the decision is final... will then be allowed to spill their bowels completely all over the figurative floors and airwaves and propagandist newspapers of these United States and the World.

The skeletons will still be moist w/ muscle and cartilage and the old bony stuff will come crumbling on to the floor as well.

BTW Clinton "Bundler" formerly exiled felon Norman Hsu it was reported in the paper today that he was sentenced to 3 THREE years in Federal Prison for his past escapades. Oh, and Peter Paul... google that one on the net. And Chinese dishwashers, and can't forget Bill's philandering which continues to this day.

:eyes:This is my prediction, I have been pretty solid thus far. So thinking pragmatically at this point before the nominee is carved in stone, "WE" do have a choice IF "WE" IGNORE THE PAID PUNDITS both familiar and new. and if "WE" ignore the endless discussion about who has the MOST Money...

:wtf: because after all the two party system IS a FARCE... We have but one party...

The $MONEY$ PArty and John Edwards ain't play'n their game! :think:

:wtf: WHO was the Englishman pumping Clinton on MSNBC this morning? Never seen him before! And Peter Fenn, who derives his income... WORKING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT CANDIDATES and propagandizing on behalf of the ESTABLISHMENT line!

The Pundits on TV like Peter Fenn, Brazille, Blitzer, Andrea Mitchell, (Greenspans wife), Chris Matthews, John Roberts, and even in select circumstances... gasp.... Olberman, owe their livlihood to the ESTABLISHMENT... THAT EMPLOYS THEM! :think:

There is nothing objective about this process the rahrah, lies and manipulation are not even veiled this time around. WAKE UP AMERICA!

This IS... "Corporatist Nation!" :nuke:

May God Help Us All

John Edwards is the only choice for America in 2008. :yourock:

36. Yes. Because it's not about us.
Those of us who think we are so "plugged in" because we're political geeks are often way off the mark when it comes to what connects with mainstream voters. We sit there and pick apart politicians' statements and hold them to an absurdly high standard of rhetorical and ideological purity. Or we swallow the conventional wisdom of the party elite or the media. Obama is connecting with voters on an emotional level. That message of unity is resonating. Partisan Dems and progressives may hate it but it obviously worked in Iowa. Obama got the most votes from independents and Rs who caucused in Iowa. Lily-white Iowa. He removed all doubt that a Black man with a funny name can get votes in the Heartland.

My bf and I were out tonight and a man noticed my Obama sticker on my shirt. He sat down and started chatting with us. Turns out he was a RW nutter. He announced to us that GWB was too centrist for him. But he told us, with a totally straight face, that he liked that Obama fellow and would be okay with him being President.

You may not have caught the fever but a lot of other people have. Hillary Clinton and John Edwards are great public servants and terrific candidates, but neither has that "it" factor that Obama has.

We've never needed someone with an "it" factor more than at this time in history.
