Wins South Carolina
Third in Michigan
Fourth in Arizona
Third in Delaware
Second in Missouri
Fourth in New Mexico
Fourth in North Dakota
Second in Oklahoma
Third in Washington
Fourth in Maine
Second in Tennessee
Second in Virginia
Fourth in DC
Second in Wisconsin
Third in Hawaii
Second in Idaho
Second in Utah
Second in California,Connecticut,Georgia,Maryland, Mass,Minesota,NY,Ohio,RI

Then on Thursday, March 4th:
(03-04) 04:00 PST Washington -- North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who inspired Democrats with his call to end poverty and made the outsourcing of American jobs overseas a central campaign issue, ended his bid for the presidency Wednesday with a fervent plea to his supporters to rally behind....

Not predictions... These are the primary placements for Edwards in the 2004 election *before* he dropped out. He was using public financing then, as well.

Think his campaign is finished with a second in Iowa and a second/third in NH in 2008? I don't think so.

on edit: Added "Think is campaign is" before finished in the last question to avoid ambiguity.

8. I'd like to see Edwards bump out Hillary but
The difference between 2004 and 2008 is that 2008 has TWO candidates who have campaign $$$ to stay in as long as they want. And those two candidates lead in about every state.

Dean crashed pretty quickly in 2004. I don't think that is going to happen to Hillary, and it certainly isn't going to happen to Obama anytime soon.

10. I imagine it is possible in that scenario to win the democratic nom without
winning a single state. Mathematically, at least.

Kerry was winning almost everything in 2004, but it didn't deter Edwards. With the winning being split between Obama and Clinton, Edwards might be the key to a brokered convention.

3. The voter turn out alone tells you this is not 2004
American workers have now also been abused for another 4 years and they appear to be in a populist mood and unhappy with the status quo. I know I am. However, I think he is running against a better group of candidates in 2008 versus 2004 as well.

11. He doesn't have to win anything to stay in.
I think Hillary will win some primaries, and Obama will win some too. If Edwards stays in there with them, it will lead to a brokered convention and he definitely has a chance there.

If I was him, I would keep up the anti-corporate message and let Hillary/Barak fight it out between themeselves for the extra 2 or 3 delegates that go to the winner of a state if it remains close.

12. The difference was that Edwards surprised people with a 2nd place finish in Iowa.
Which made him the de facto alternative to Kerry. Remember, Edwards wasn't expected to do well at all in Iowa. Many predicted him to finish behind Dean, Gephardt and then Kerry. So finishing 2nd was a big story and one that propelled his campaign. This time around, I think many thought Edwards needed to win Iowa, not just show up at a distant 2nd and statistically tied for 3rd.
