Has anyone ever lost IA and NH but won the nomination?
Not that I can recall. I think Clinton is done for if she loses NH, sadly Edwards may be as well. Just glad its Obama, of all the people to lose to... it would hurt so good!

5. But didn't Bill get a boost from his NH showing?
It seems like Hillary is in the opposite situation. She was suppossed to steamroll her opposition and she's getting spanked.

11. He got a boost for finishing second.
No one thought he could. That's where he became the "Comeback Kid"

14. It should also be noted that he wasn't the national frontrunner, and was not very well known

20. He was at the time of NH - he was way ahead in national polls, but
it was his recovery in New Hampshire that stopped him bleeding after the Gennifer Flowers stuff.

27. I believe I read it in his or Sid Blumenthal's book -
also I saw someone post a poll here from around Feb '92 that had Clinton at 41% nationally but way down in NH. Expected to lose by double-digits, he came second by only 8, hence making him the 'Comeback Kid', heading into South Carolina, which he won and then swept the South.

Oddly enough the closest I could find online was this, which mentions he had become the frontrunner early on.
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1996/candidates/democrat/clinton/campaign.92.shtml

I'll try to find something better soon! But I know for certain he was way up in national polls only to be falling behind in NH. This article makes a point of the fact that he had the best national organisation.

Cheers
Josh

10. Not the same thing.
Bill clinton didn't contest Iowa, nor did he hold a double digit lead in NH at any time. The fact that she contested both of them very heavily and stands to lose both of them should show that people do not want her.

17. I do not disagree with you on that. It is quite a different situation.
Harkin was a lock on IA, so spending there would have been a waste. And the second place was an outstanding showing for the lesser known Bill Clinton and the major story out of NH.

Hillary did compete in IA, and is not a come-from-nowhere success story, so a second place finish for her is hard to call a victory. However, she has the money to stay in the race until Super Tuesday, so she doesn't need to win in NH or IA, although if she finishes behind Edwards and Obama, those national numbers will evaporate quickly.

I don't think she can beat them in SC, so for Hillary, she's got to perform in NV and NH to keep her national numbers afloat. At least that's my take, anyway.

That was before condensed primary schedules. If Obama wins New Hampshire, he will be unstoppable with this calendar.
