More on Drudge's "Hillary's Exit" headline
TALK OF HILLARY EXIT ENGULFS CAMPAIGNS
Mon Jan 07 2008 09:46:28 ET

Facing a double-digit defeat in New Hampshire, a sudden collapse in national polls and an expected fund-raising drought, Senator Hillary Clinton is preparing for a tough decision: Does she get out of the race? And when?!

"She can't take multiple double-digit losses in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada," laments one top campaign insider. "If she gets too badly embarrassed, it will really harm her. She doesn't want the Clinton brand to be damaged with back-to-back-to-back defeats."

Meanwhile, Democrat hopeful John Edwards has confided to senior staff that he is staying in the race because Hillary "could soon be out."

MORE

Key players in Clinton's inner circle are said to be split. James Carville is urging her to fight it out through at least February and Super Tuesday, where she has a shot at thwarting Barack Obama in a big state. But others close to the former first lady now see no possible road to victory, sources claim.

4. Defensive?
Look, there was a previous thread about the Drudge headline. It makes sense that people want to know what's up with it. If you read the article, it's clear that there's not much up with it at all.

Simmer down.

5. This is the Age of the Internet
Like it or not, Drudge is a player in political news and rumor.

Ignoring what is posted there won't make it go away.

I hate him, too -- but this particular story is going to be talked about all day, everywhere on the web.

That's just the truth, so don't 'kill' the DU messenger.

21. You made the argument that the OP was driving up traffic. Can't do that with no link.
When you read an article from Drudge posted in full on this website, the magic internet tubes don't give money to Drudge.

The OP did the responsible thing: Inform people about what was posted on Drudge's site without linking to it. People were interested in seeing if there was any substance to the story. There was not. End of story.

33. Who's yelling? Just pointing out ridiculousness and weakness.
The ridiculousness of claiming that no one knows how to get to drudge's site without a link, and the weakness of arguing that posting bullshit (that just happens to smear your guy's opponent) from a right wing smear site in order to show that it is bullshit.

It would seem a collossal waste of time to try to defend smears such as you have tried to do here.

36. You're smearing me. I didn't claim that no one knows how to get to Drudge's site.
I claimed - correctly - that the OP did not include a link to Drudge's site, an effect of which would be not to drive up traffic to Drudge by people clicking on a post on DU. Since the first person made the argument that the poster was getting more people to click on Drudge, increasing his revenue, this was an understandable argument on my part, I think.

Please don't smear me again. Thanks.

39. Oh stop whining, I'm not smearing you. Sheesh, you're falsely attacking me now.
If I read the OP and wanted to see it for myself so visited that cesspool of a site it would drive up traffic.

And again, defending the content of the op as ok because people want to see that kind of crap to know that it is there is bs.

Called it like I saw it.

Didn't smear you.

Relax.

22. I don't think he'd get a single one
of Hillary's supporters. He automatically closed the door on that when he chose to play kissy face with Obama at Hillary's expense, thinking he might get a boost in the polls. Boy was he ever wrong.

I cannot believe Elizabeth approves of this behavior

I think she condones it a hundred percent. Best of health to her, and I admire her courage, but god I can't stand that woman.

48. I think that both he and Elizabeth are desperate
Elizabeth's comment on the eve of the campaign that Obama's plan would make it impossible to get health insurance was a very sleazy attack on many levels. Edwards' unbelievable attempt to speak of how he and Obama won and both had change as a message reminds me of Leiberman insisting he was in a 3 way tie for third - except he had a few percent less than the guys he was tied with. Part of this was positive spin and a hope that something would happen that would make him more viable.

He will now be at an enormous disadvantage. He will have finished second, just as in 2004. Then will likely finish third just as in 2004. (Nevada is next and no one is mentioning him there - Didn't he pull Nevada people for a stronger Ohio?) Then there is SC, his one high point in the whole 2004 primary season - and he is now running a poor third - compared to winning with 45% of the vote. He will then be far weaker than he was in 2004 - and at that point, Kerry was a very heavy favorite.

On top of it, the next step will be Super Tuesday and Edwards is very unlikely to have enough money to be competitive. Here, it is not like Iowa where time could replace some of the money. I assume that he will stay in primarily because he wants to get his message out and running gives him a platform.

50. I coudn't agree more
It's funny how everyone is painting Hillary as being the only one who's acting desperate when John Edwards has been acting desperate all throughout these primaries and even before. I mean, the guy practically took up residence in Iowa for the last few years, he pulls all-nighters....make that all-weeekers...he attacks Hillary in last ditch efforts to raise his popularity because he thinks people will like him for going after her, and he sucks up to Obama in a lame attempt to bully Hillary for whatever reason only he himself knows. If anyone's desperate, it's Edwards. Hillary might be extremely concerned, but she's not desperate yet. She won't be desperate until the national polls show Obama with the lead, and yes, that could happen.
