Those Who Win Both Iowa and New Hampshire Share a Title: ‘Nominee’

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton , D-N.Y., is counting on the “Super-Duper Tuesday” primaries Feb. 5 to rescue her presidential campaign if she falters again in New Hampshire. But history offers her little cause for optimisim.

In competitive races over the past three and a half decades, every candidate who won both the Iowa precinct caucuses and the New Hampshire primary went on to win his party’s nomination. If the latest tracking polls are accurate and the historical pattern holds true, Sen. Barack Obama , D-Ill., could be one day away from clinching the Democratic nomination. Only a major stumble appears likely to break his grip if he wins New Hampshire on Tuesday.

Five candidates in recent decades won both Iowa and New Hampshire, and each became their party’s nominee: Jimmy Carter in 1976 and 1980, Gerald Ford in 1976, Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

Since 1972, all but two major party nominees won either Iowa or New Hampshire, or both, en route to becoming the nominee. The exceptions were Democrats George McGovern in 1972 and Bill Clinton in 1992.

1. Nothing holds true this year
Obama's in great shape, but anything can happen with this wacked-out primary schedule.

2. I agree...I was going to post
that..history teaches us some things but you can not depend on something this unpredictable. And, afterall, bill clinton was one of those who didn't win in those two states.

7. How so? Because there's no time to regroup?
There's also no time to build a tidal wave of momentum and to bleed your competition dry.

15. the close proximity of NH to Iowa and
SC being added on as an early primary. There's actually plenty of time for momentum to build- look at NH and SC. And Super Tuesday is actually a national primary: the candidate who goes in to the contests that day with big momentum, will have a very good day.

6. Think about your premise.....
...two small states - do the math on their populations versus the 300 million in the country.

Those two states should determine who the presidential nominees of the party are for either or both major parties?

Consider that it might not be YOUR candidate who is so inevitable.

12. LOL.. "except for before three decades ago"..."except for McGovern and Clinton"
This is one of those try-too-hard statistics you come up with to prop up your team's superbowl chances. Fun but meaningless

14. Excuse me but HRC has not lost anything yet, especially not
the nominee.....Wait, the "Obama landslide" was what, 38%? That means 62% of Iowa Democrats didn't like Obama, yet Bush's presswhores keep saying, "America has changed, Obama has charmed the white man."Anybody believe that?

Remember what they did to Harold Ford in 06? Who thinks America has changed in the last 14 months?

the count of delegates obama 16 hrc 15 edwards 14......
