Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 07:53 PM by youthere
I'm from Iowa and had my shot for Biden..so my support can be nothing but symbolic. I hope Hillary wins tomorrow, if for nothing else just to piss off all the assholes who are slamming her today for being a human being and showing a little emotion. I've NEVER been a Hillary supporter but tomorrow Hillary is my candidate. On Wednesday I will go back to being neutral. I will stand up and cheer for her to win NH. She gets kicked for being too cold...then she gets kicked for "crying". To hell with you all. And before you start in about how "phony" she is, you damn sure better ask yourself if you've ever questioned the sincerity of any male candidate (including your own) that has shown the least bit of emotion. I hope it's Hillary by a landslide..and all of you out there that think that you are providing a service by slamming her every opportunity you get, I hope your "karma" comes back to bite your own candidate in the ass.

On edit...and for those of you that would waste my time by posting reasons why you are justified in acting like immature right wing assholes, don't bother because I don't give a flying fuck.

:nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr: :nuke: :grr:

3. I'm sorry
When did people begin to think that we should all hold hands and love our opponents in the middle of the Primaries.

In the middle of the GE, if the republican starts getting slammed, are we suppose to let up on him so that he can get his footing back? Do we root for him to win a few polls to help his feelings?

Give me a break.

118. Don't worry...
if Hillary is down tommorrow the attacks will begin on Obama and it won't be pretty. Once he is the nominee everything will be thrown at him. I don't want to the nominee to be chosen yet. The media is making sure to be nice to Obama now and then it will begin. I am already tired of hearing about his middle name, or that he is a muslim. If you watch the repubs they are so giddy because they know once Hillary is out they will have a ball. Some people seem to forget what the CONS have done for the past seven years. They are ready to pounce and they have the questions set up for Obama and once he says something they can use we will hear a lot of buyers remorse. They have already chosen our candidates.

134. If he were imploding because of racist attacks -- as the attack against HRC
is sexist -- I would be rooting for his triumph, absolutely.

Why are Mitt's tears "poignant" and George's "moving"? But HRC's emotion either "phony" or a sign of "weakness"? Sexism, plain and simple. A woman is damned if she doesn't show emotion, and damned if she does.

152. the saddest thing is the attacks on HRC are HERE on DU.
I read your post and thought.. so true.. then I realized that it's the MSM that is typically saying those things, but the venom against Hillary was here, on a supposedly progressive site. I suspect that many many of the past year's new members are of the young male variety, who have never actually been around to see the struggles women have been through. If we aren't ready to put out, or aren't a size 0, or not 20, then women have no use for them. They're using anything they can to marginalize Hillary because she's not only a woman, but a woman who has no use to them. She's not a gamer, she's not posing in Maxim, and she's not tattooed.

I was open minded about Obama at first, read up on him and decided he wasn't what I was looking for but still open to him if he gets the nod or my fave drops out. Then... I visited DU again after a few months off. Contrary to what you think, the venom spewed against HRC by the Obama supporters here has turned off so many people, and I am one of them. If a candidate seems to attract only misinformed assholes, then I have to deduce that he is not worthy of my support. I hate assholes. It's one of my quirks. I'm coming to a point where I may not vote for Obama even if he gets the nod...

Seriously, the complete derision by the Hillary camp for Kucinich makes no sense. Strategically having him in the race as long as possible helps Hillary by spliting the prog vote. So why is there so much under the table work to keep him out of the debates and marginalized.

It never really made much sense to me, though it seems to be a good representation about how the left has been treated for years within the party we are supposed to just line up and vote for.

Truely sad.

227. Of course
Why should the left be addressed in any regard? Far easier to just throw a few empty platitudes and buzzwords, say as little as possible so that you can run like gangbusters to the right during the general (never mind that you cannot win with a strategy like that) and then after getting elected run even further to the right.

I wonder if it occurs to any of you that a lot of us on the left, people who have been resisting the Bush administration since the begining of it, actually do care about the fate of this nation. I am continually surprised at the arguments I encounter here for moderation, moderate candidates, and agasint impeachement. I thought this website was called "Democratic underground", not "the Association of squishy moderate DINO lovers"

I was just kind of disappointed at how quickly Edwards pounced earlier today (even though he did not specifically say anything bad about HRC)... fortunately he only brought up the strength / resolve thing once, and since then he has only said that the campaign process is grueling and that he has no other comment on the so-called story. I really wish that Edwards supporters would follow his lead and not comment any further. I understand that you are mainly commenting on the mood at DU.

35. Romney's blubbering was fake...
HRC's isn't. She's someone who seems genuinely grateful for the opportunities she's had, and concerned about our future. If someone with an (R) behind their name gets in, heaven forbid, we're in for another 4 (or more) years of social regression. Mark my words. She's right, as are Edwards, Obama, Richardson, and Kucinich. We can't afford to regress any more into this mire the Repugs have put us into. I'm not 100% on exactly who I'd vote for yet, but Hillary won some brownie points with me today for letting the public see that she has a heart.

It's not just about strength, it's about humanity. One without the other gets you nowhere. Just look at *...all balls, no brains, and certainly no heart, despite the "compassionate conservative" bullshit he threw out there in '00. I'm sure glad the candidates on our side of the aisle have more passion and compassion in one finger than all of the Repugs lumped together.

174. We're in an era of lefty boys convinced by advertisers that they are gods...
Seriously. They've grown up in a world where women are only useful if they're: young, thin, breasty, willing to put out, play video games. They've been convinced by people who want them to buy things that they are somehow more SPECIAL and more INTERESTING and more POWERFUL than they really are. Dude- they're just trying to get you to drink more Mountain Dew, it's not that you're any more entitled or special or good looking than any other sex, race, age, or style. Though I know it's hard to understand, as most of your experiences seem to involve playing games or drinking or eating pizza, but there is actual value in people that aren't showing their tits on Myspace or screwing virtual hookers (then killing them) in GTA.

The advertisers have done a number on you. It's not your fault you think you rule the world, that's their idea. They prop up your adolescent egos in order to get you to buy more stuff, rather than grow as adults and read a book or volunteer to help others.

FYI boys, we're not electing a "rock star", it's not a contest for a new veejay on MTV, this will be the leader of the free world, someone that has the experience and power to keep your sorry asses out of a draft. Now take your special little selves over to 7-11 for some Red Bull and the latest copy of Maxim.

206. and btw
I find this whole little rant you've gone on to be incredibly misinformed. While you put the plight of women on the current generation and our sexism, it really forces you to just look back and remember how great women had it in the past. I'm not saying the womens rights movement, or any of the smaller movements associated with it are bad, in fact I support them, and I believe there is much work to be done to make women equal in not just law, but in practice, in government where it is dominantly male, etc.

But I am below 30, and sometimes i drink Mountain Dew, and I do enjoy an occasional romp of GTA killing, i find pizza incredibly tasty, and getting drunk is just a downright enjoyable experience a lot of the time. I guess this must mean that my "adolescent ego" has taken control of me. That really jives with the political science degree I am in college working on, payed in part by me working long hours, and some scholarship money I got from working my ass off before college too. So you should consider stop generalizing about whole generations of Americans, and look back and realize, there were assholes in your generation too, and there were really really stupid trends, as there have in every generation, and realize that just because you're older, doesn't necessarily make you right.

P.S. I hate MTV and Red Bull
P.P.S. I'll be getting the new GTA game when it comes out, I'll let you borrow it after I beat it.

91. I'm amazed that some people think it was not planned in advance.
Time for a reality check. Everything the candidates say at these public meetings and when the TV cameras are on them is planned and prepared in advance.

Clinton's campaign team was worried that maybe she had come across as too tough in the ABC TV debate, and so Hillary needed to show that she also has a softer side.

Notice how they basically set the whole thing up like a press conference. All the TV cameras were invited to capture the moment when Hillary showed her softer side.

Hillary's message seems to be: "Please vote for me because if I don't start winning soon then I will really take it personally. Haven't I suffered enough already?"

If you are planning to break down and get emotional, you don't do it when someone asks "Who does your hair."

I'm feeling that Iowa and NH have basically picked our candidate. I live in CA and have been basically uncommitted but after yesterday sincerely hope HRC puts in a decent showing in NH.

Some of the Obama fans on this forum truly suck. I cried the past two presidential elections because of * and can't believe I'm seriously considering changing parties to cast a vote for Ron Paul next month.

74. the politics of silliness
because it is all just a game, and poor widdle Hiwwawy's feelings matter far more than the future of this party, of the poor and working class, and of the country. Because I, or somebody else who cares about progressive issues, typed something mean on the internets, we all deserve to have another President Clinton to set the progressive movement back another two decades or more.

The logic there is ironclad.

As did civil rights, the health of children, education, etc. etc. etc. I'm not sure what utopian dream you're envisioning, but Bill Clinton did more for workers and families than anyone ever has.

202. sure they did
welfare reform, NAFTA, and the telecommunications act were all designed to benefit the working class. When he entered office in 1993 the share of income going to the top 5% was 21%, when he left office it was 21.9%. The share of income going to the bottom 40% was stagnant, it dropped by .1%.

"More than anyone ever has". Yeah, he makes FDR and LBJ look like pikers. NOT. Kennedy/Johnson for example took the poverty rate from 18.1% down to 10%. Clinton took it from 12.3% down to 8.7%. When he entered office the real value of the minimum wage was $4.61 when he left office it was $4.56 (in 1996 dollars). When Kennedy entered office it was $6.03 and when Johnson left office it was $7.21. It didn't used to be utopian to expect the real value of the minimum wage to increase.

Nobody cares that Hillary "cried".

In fact, she didn't "cry".

What makes me sick about her little performance is the TIMING.

The NIGHT after Edwards jumps out in a debate by stating that
"it's personal" for him that the 'pukes be taken out, she's
using the SAME WORDING and adding a touch of:

LEAVE HILLARY ALONE!!!!

I certainly did not find her insincere.

In fact, she caused tears to well in my eyes.

Speaking of Biden, I wish he were in the race. I believe he would be perhaps our best candidate, would inspire & energize Americans, & would be probably our best president.

But as of this point, I think Edwards is our best chance to beat the forces of evil, & also best positioned to resist being compromised by corporatist pressures.

I don't care if there is a more rhetorically on message and appealing crisp new candidate that doesn't leave the media ratings flat and faux journalists suffering from ennui. This whole front loaded media controlled BS nomination process is crap. Why would any Democrat even be thinking they want bi-partisanship at this point? How many times do we have to bend over and get stuck with raw butt sores and the least common denominator.

Interesting choice of words, when your new favorite candidate recently had this to say...

“I don’t think it was by accident that Al Qaeda decided to test the new prime minister. They watch our elections as closely as we do, maybe more closely than some of our fellows citizens do…. Let’s not forget you’re hiring a president not just to do what a candidate says during the election, you want a president to be there when the chips are down.”

everyone. However, that said, I think she has got the wrong people evidently running her campaign and we can see how those kind of mis-steps can kill you in the general election. There is no way Gore or Kerry should have lost their elections to GWB. Also, Hillary is so closely aligned with people such as the establishment, Washington insiders, lobbyists, letting Rupert Murdoch hold a fundraiser at his home. I think with Obama's electability, his speaking ability, his youthfulness, his voice of change, he is the better candidate or Edwards for that matter over Hillary.

As are Edwards, Obama, Richardson, Kucinich and even Gravel (and so were *sniffle* Biden and Dodd). They are all running on a sound democratic platform. The country will be better off when any of them win in November.

Hillary was ahead, now Obama is ahead, maybe it will be Edwards next -- whoever wins the primary will get my vote in November. Not only that, I'll put up a yard sign, afix a bumper sticker and wear the pin. I'll donate the their campaign and go from door to door as part of the GOTV effort.

And whoever wins the Republican nomination will be Public Enemy #1 -- let's face it any one of our candidates has more integrity, more honesty and better politics in their little finger than the entire republican slate put together.

(deep breath)

Just sayin'

I'm not supporting any of the candidates right now, but I'm not happy with the media right now (so what else is new?). Matthews played a great clip of Hillary putting him in his place with great charm and wit. That is the Hillary that should have been out there all along. That doesn't change her position on many issues that I don't necessarily agree with, but it did show a real person who I could relate to.

130. Thank you for your post!!
You have eloquently expressed the frustration that some of us feel of the treatment that Hillary has always received since she came to national attention. I've seen a lot of misogynist comments from the media, other politicians and regular folks piled on this remarkable woman over the years. Everything about her for the last 16 years makes news and is dissected mercilessly: her hair, clothes, age, laughter, etc.

I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with her position on the issues because that is a legitimate argument, but to bash her because she had one small emotional moments after many months of campaigning is infuriating!!!

I'm perfectly aware that today she will lose to Obama, but this is only the beginning. While it is a setback, there's still February 5th and I think it's way too soon to declare her candidacy dead on its tracks. Same goes for Edwards.

Here in NJ, we are taking it in stride and in my neighborhood (Hoboken) we are meeting tonight for Happy Hour to bolster our spirits and to plan our strategy. Remember: Never surrender, never give up!!!!

to Hillary's campaign. I watched Dan Abrams last night and he hit it right on the head. The MSM is going after Hillary but not Obama. They are making the sure that the candidate they want is the winner. He was excellent. You know that Obama cannot stand up to the Corporate interests in this country. They made the last selection too. Edwards doesn't have a chance of a snowball in hell against what the MSM won't allow people to know. Now I will send a contribution to Edwards.

I saw McAuliffe last night (I forgot in which program) and he mentioned that they received $1M in the four days after the IA loss.

Too many people are ringing the death toll of her campaign prematurely. There are some of us who don't vote with the wind, we have a candidate and we stick with that person through thick and thin until every vote is counted and every primary has been played out.

Let's not rush like lemmings over the cliff just because the media has now found their new darling and they have already proclaimed him the winner.

138. She wasn't emotional just because she loves America so much
She started to get emotional because she can see her campaign going down the drain. That being said, I feel that this can only help her and really did make me like her more, and I'm not a Hillary supporter. She needs to say more things like what she said to CNN.

“It's usually a mother who throws arm around me and says thank you for the Children's Health Care insurance program, or a man who drove here all the way here from New York to say I'd saved jobs in New York. That's really moving to me. That's how I judge the job I'm doing."

She can point to all of the concrete things that she's done and not just talk about change like Obama and Edwards.

183. I'm not sure what you mean by "sexism."
If you're upset by my contention that there are some stupid men with unresolved mommy-issues who have found ways to keep women down and in a world of shit during their adult lives, who deserve a comeuppance one way or another, then so be it.

But maybe I read ya wrong.

142. Get over it! People don't like Hillary.
Yes, the MSM overly scrutinizes everything she does. Her hair, her smile, her clothes, is she not nice enough, can a woman be an effective leader? For whatever reason, people don't like the woman. Yes, it's lame that some people won't vote for her because of those qualities, but let's quit whining about it and get to work.

Come on, ONE name in this whole great big country. ONE WOMAN that the media wouldn't distort into a monster for the crime of getting above herself and running for president. Millions of women in this country and all I'm asking for is ONE name.

It's unfortunate but if that's another reason that people don't want to vote for her then don't expect me to care. I'm not interested in voting for Mrs. Clinton just because she's a woman.

Not one in this entire country? MILLIONS of citizens and you can't think of ONE woman you'd vote for as president?

You dismissed Hillary Clinton from your consideration because she's a woman.

208. I didn't dismiss her because she's a woman
I'm dismissing her because a. I don't think that she can win and b. because if she were able to win, I imagine her being so divisive with her history that she wouldn't even be able to govern. I think that being 1 out of 100 senators she is able to keep the partisan republicans off of her back a little bit. Being the frst female president I think that the bull's eye would be back on.

Secondly, I'm trying to sum up reasons why others wouldn't vote for a woman. I don't have any personal problems with Hillary. In fact, I thought that yesterday's "incident" made her look better. You should probably be picking this fight with someone else.

:* Seriously, thank you for being so damn human. The relentless attacks on Hillary actually solidified my support for her tremendously. And the supporters of another certain candidate have turned me completely off of him, so that I'm not sure I could even vote for him the general election. The relentless attacks against one candidate always backfires when attributed to another candidate's supporters... I find myself spending more time finding reasons not to like their candidate, rather than be open to him.

Edwards supporters and Biden supporters have been the kindest here... Hillary's supporters are close on their heels but with a touch more fire (as we're constantly defending our candidate and ourselves).

Thanks for your post! You're a gem!

184. About taking advantage of media spin
Just stop it. Maybe it is better not even to note it much since whatever efforts are made by any side it works the way the GOP wants it to.

No one talks about Chimpy's near breakdowns, pouting, self-absorbed lunacy. Physically, Hillary has just taken an unaccustomed pounding on top of the emotional gut wrenching. She never ever had to hit the campaign trail so hard and so on her own with nothing but chains around her neck. She is holding up real well, except that, under pressure, everyone who is faintly human gives away some thoughts and feelings a politician with a second pause would not say. So it has been negatively instructive, but then under these kind of emotions it is hardwired into all of us to get blue, negative, bitter or whatever.

Nor can the armchair fans and critics here restrain their relatively unchallenged emotions to simply see what is going on, have a little sympathy that goes along with better judgment.

I am thinking a great many people, conflicted in their own way, want Hillary to get back in the race strongly, but those against her- and us- can't stop the accustomed barrage which she is taking off safe, favorable ground.

If she could carry off an upset, or close second, today....we will have one hell of a campaign race more like the less rigged days. So as far as I can judge, slamming her unfairly is based on a very legitimate fear. The race could make us forget simpler more unchanging realities and issues...like November vulnerability, the center/progressive fight, and starting to knock down the untouched losers in the GOP who have no intention really of losing the WH. Nothing is so vicious as a family quarrel. the closer one is- and disagrees on key issues- the more bitter it could become. Meanwhile, as far I have seen, the house, my fellow posters, is still burning toward the basement.

I won't bother you with all the examples of male candidates who've teared up on occasion and no one even noticed, certainly not the media.

189. I understand. When will the MSM take elections
seriously? This is media hype just like all of the MSM coverage.

I think we should ALL boycott the MSM. The MSM is doing a disservice to the people.

"WE ARE THE DECIDERS" (Molly Ivins). Let´s just turn off the MSM.

I´m for JRE and think the entire MSM coverage of the election process is skewed and terrible. How is it skewed? Well, by the MSM declaring winners on the Democratic side or Republican side depending on 2 State´s votes! This is crazy!

Let´s make this a 50 State race! JRE is in it all the way and HRC is too. Let´s give everyone a chance to participate in every state (well MI and FL appear to be ruled out but we need to take that up locally with local Dems and take the whole process up to revision at the National level).

198. Not Genuine In My Opinion
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 03:25 PM by CadenBlaker
I feel her reaction yesterday was calculated. I came to this conclusion after viewing the clip in it's entirety. I'm sorry, but I know the Clinton political "win at all costs" machine and I'm not buying it. I simply think you should make up your own mind, but you MUST be aware of the dirty tricks they use to try and drum up support and take any show of emotion with a grain of salt.

Consider that right after her emotional buildup she went straight into her campaign spew about how she's accomplished change. Being one of the most lobbied senators may be an accomplishment to her, but it's a part of the problem to me.

211. looked real to me...
I think the shame of it all is that Senator Clinton didn't show us this side from the beginning. Either she's a great actress and should go on to make some movies, or she was really and truly being sincere for what seems like the first time I've ever seen her do so.(which is what I believe)

She said things that made me think she actually gets it. Like she gets that the country is screwed up. She gets that things are bad and really wants to make the country better.

If she had been like this from the beginning. Spoken from the heart instead of the toughness that people expect from a politician. The coldness and greasiness. Then Obama wouldn't have stood a chance in **** of defeating her.

That's the irony of what happened. She's a woman, who acted cold and less like what people would expect of a woman, when in the end, heart is what people want. Heart, hope and change.

The disrespect being shown toward her is upsetting. Obama was my #2 choice (behind John Edwards as #1) but I am upset with both. I'm especially ticked at Obama's dissing of the boomers.

Her tears might well have been planned but they also seemed authentic.

Today I will forget about her position on the war. Go Hillary.

I'm his age, but I have the utmost respect for the men and women who fought for civil rights and for equality. Obama wouldn't even be able to be running for president if it hadn't been for the 60s generation. As a woman, I deeply respect and appreciate the hard fought battles of that era and the people who enabled I and my fellow sisters to aspire to be anything we ever wanted to be............except, as it turns out, maybe president.
